4.0 out of 5 stars Like Pulp in a really silly mood, January 19, 2001
By
Brian Fleming (Vancouver, Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Denim on Ice (Audio CD)
Smug and comic. This album covers alot of territory, both in it's subject matter and in it's instrumentation. Stolen New wave riffs from the like's of Devo and Gary Numan are mixed with country influences, and even ELO influences can be traced in "It fell of the back of a Lorry". The 'Ultravox-Vienna-esque' "Synthesisers in the rain" is a mockery of 80's new wave. Song subjects range from Oral sex (Grand dad's false teeth) to Supermodels. Very british, almost like Jarvis Cocker from pulp in a really silly mood. This is well worth your money if you like this kind of thing. Apart from it's wide range of influences it actually comes together really well and is Highly entertaining. The guy who is 'Denim' is actually Lawrence from 80's indie group "Felt" but you would never know it. Not in a million years.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wild, drugged up, synth-indie-punk-rock-pop Lawrence is nutz, January 20, 1999
This review is from: Denim on Ice (Audio CD)
Lawrence, previously of Felt, has formed the new band after a new fabric. As Felt was serious, poetic and classical musically, Denim is filled with guitar riffs, moogs and synths and tongue in cheek pop songs about oral sex, heroin, music business, supermodels and council houses. Lawrence has created an original feel and sound with his very strange lyrics. Grandad's False Teeth sounds cool but the lyrics are so silly that I can hardly listen to it... Then, I realized it was about oral sex and I liked it more. Supermodels is excellent though it's extremely catchy and has the sell-out feel. My favorite song is "Best Song In the World" because it reminds me a little bit of Felt. The lyrics are serious enough to be deep and humorous enough without being stupid. Personally, I like BACK IN DENIM better... There is some filler on this album. Obviously Lawrence wants ca$h. In SILLY RABBIT, he sings in the chorus: "I wanna hear my song on your radio.." JANE SUCK DIED IN 77 is a cool punk song too. Sometimes the album sounds too much like cheesy rock music. If he had more synth-songs like "INTERNET CURTAINS" off of NOVELTY ROCK, the album would be better. For die hard Lawrence fans, pick this up. Felt fans will be extremely shocked if they never heard Denim before... Think about it... Felt and Denim are as different bands as the fabric.
