Book Description

May 13, 2008
Denim has always been universally cool, but the renaissance that this adaptable, comfortable, stylish fabric is now experiencing is unprecedented. Never before has the all-American blue jean had such infinite possibilities—both in how you wear it (as stylized jeans, belts, cuff bracelets, or bolero jackets), what you embellish it with (lace, appliqué, metallic braid, leather, paint, or bling), and the occasions it’s appropriate for (downtown partying or uptown dining).

But before you pay hundreds of dollars to get the latest denim looks (like celebs do), learn how you can actually create your own chic pieces from recycled denim in your closet, vintage stores, and thrift shops. In Denim Revolution, former Calvin Klein design assistant Nancy Minsky offers dozens of patterns for novices to experienced stitchers that fuse recycled denim with cool embellishments—mixing together old, new, vintage, antique, rugged, and modern to spice up your wardrobe. And you don’t have to be a master seamstress to get these fresh looks; many of the projects are designed for beginners and don’t even require a sewing machine. All have step-by-step instructions, sketches, and photographs to guide you.

In each of the six sections, you’ll find something to suit your personal style—be it “Denim Destroy Jeans” (for raw, reckless types), a twenty-first-century“Downtown Babe Jean Jacket” (for savvy city girls), “Alice in Wonderland Appliquéd Pedal Pushers” (for a feminine, spring look), or “Victorian Romance Lacy Cuffs” (for a fanciful bohemian flair). Not ready to take on a project from scratch? Then learn to artfully add wear and tear to jeans you already own or easily convert a pair into a skirt.

Also included: A sewing tutorial and tips and techniques on everything from cutting fur and fraying edges to embellishing denim with embroidery, other fabrics, ribbon, lace, or paint.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Adult/High School—A book of "ripped up, hipped up, glammed out, do-it-yourself denim designs for funky fashionistas." Minsky has one rule—that the denim may not be purchased. All of the projects are from recycled clothing and include jackets, bags, skirts, hats, and lots of embellished pants. Each design has clear instructions that include the level of difficulty, materials needed, and step-by-step instructions with sketches or photographs. Many of the projects include materials such as lace, buttons, ribbons, and many other fabrics, and not all require a sewing machine. There are instructions for painting, stenciling, and bleaching denim as well as templates and patterns that can be photocopied and enlarged. Overall, this is a user-friendly book, and each idea can be modified to suit readers' personal styles.—Jane Ritter, Mill Valley School District, CA

5.0 out of 5 stars A must buy, May 20, 2008
This review is from: Denim Revolution: Dozens of Ways to Turn Denim Cast-Offs into Fashion Must-Haves (Paperback)
This is a book that reaches out to all ages. I myself as a grandmother envisage working through a few of the designs with my ten year old granddaughter. The illustrations and the accompagnying instructions are clear and concise. The book itself is pleasing to the eye and inspires a sense of design and fashion, encompassing the ever increasing need for a "greener" society. For those people who take pleasure in design, fashion, and sewing, this is a book that you can truly enjoy. It also makes a good gift.

5.0 out of 5 stars Judging a book by it's cover!!, May 23, 2008
This review is from: Denim Revolution: Dozens of Ways to Turn Denim Cast-Offs into Fashion Must-Haves (Paperback)
I love fashion and just bought this book, because I loved the cover and the publisher's description. I am NOT disappointed. The projects are not the kind of clothes that look homemade in the negative sense of the word, but the kind of clothes that look handmade in a positive way, they are gorgeous designer threads, that look like they sell for $$$ but you can make with no budget. This book is hip with a nonchalant French look. There are projects for all the skill levels and different styles, with descriptions from a designer's viewpoint, to get the right look that is also eco right. Right now I feel like I am on a shopping spree, but I've go to stop writing and start sewing and I'm going to make those cargo pants!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fashion Savvy using your old or new jeans, May 18, 2008
This review is from: Denim Revolution: Dozens of Ways to Turn Denim Cast-Offs into Fashion Must-Haves (Paperback)
Nancy Minsky's Denim Revolution is a fabulous book! I loved the idea of recycling my soft old jeans. I couldn't wait to get this book and was thrilled when it arrived. The book made me feel like I was part of the creative process; it is a resource of ideas, simple instructions, high fashion illustrations, and amazing photos. There is something for everyone in this book. This book got my creative side thinking about what I could do with my old Levi's. This book shows infinite possibilites with denim.
