Editorial Reviews

When the abdominal muscles are strong they can aid in posture, spine alignment, and general torso stability (not to mention enhancing the appearance of one's mid section). These fundamentals are presented in Denise Austin: Super Stomachs through a quick (yet advanced) 15-minute conditioning class that targets the muscles of the abdominal wall. Austin works toward the goals of increased power and stamina through standing and supine (lying on the back) exercises. The short length of this regimen creates a lighthearted and quick workout that can build up strength (when used with frequency). The movements are advanced and it may become apparent to some participants that this video came out circa 1988. Floor work, or strength training, has taken on a much slower controlled approach in recent years with safety as a focus. Many of the exercises executed here require fast movements from side to side and others entail lifting the arms and legs simultaneously, leaving the low back and neck in a compromising position. Advanced exercisers with great stamina may be able to perform these moves without risk, but beginners should modify these exercises (unfortunately no modifications are offered by Austin). If you have an affinity for mid- to late-'80s music and attire, then this video is for you. However participants may want to proceed with caution when trying this layout for the first time. All abdominal areas get attention in this session and the benefit potential is real, but the early release date of this video shows both in content and format. --Olivia Voigts

5.0 out of 5 stars fast and efficient, September 23, 2001
This review is from: Denise Austin - Super Stomachs [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This tape is from 1986, with Denise as perky as ever, but with brown hair, and a cut out leotard that shows us just how hard a tummy can get.
It starts with about 4 minutes of standing exercises (mostly waist bends) that are easy and make a good warm-up.
The following section is comprised of floor exercises that I didn't find too difficult (except for the last one, which can used as a "goal" !), but definitely felt "the burn", so I knew they were working.
This video has several advantages.
# 1: It's so short that there's no excuse not to do the routine at least 4 times a week.
# 2: Your muscles will tell you it's extremely well thought out and effective....oh that burn !
# 3: It takes very little space, so if you have a small room, this is the tape for you ! A 4 x 5 carpet or mat will do very nicely.
The simple set looks like a low-budget production...it has several TV monitors, which on occasion show different angles to the movements which is useful, and some mannequins standing around...for whatever reason ! It also has music (by Roger Hatfield) that sounds a little like the intro to Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean", and will help you keep going and going. This tape is excellent, and a shame that it's out of print, but it's not hard to find used, and well worth the purchase.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Ab Video Ever Made, August 22, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Denise Austin - Super Stomachs [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Some things never get old. Super Stomachs from Denise Austin was made back in 1986 and just wait until you see her outfit... (especially the shoes) but it is still by far the most effective ab video ever. It's a short 15 minute workout from start to finish but the excercises are really challenging, basically keeping your abs in an isometric excercise the whole time. If you can last up until about the 8 minute mark you first time through it, you're doing great. Of course, Denise is encouraging you all the way and her trademark "Woo!" is heard many times during the workout. You'll definitely need all the encouragement you can get to keep yourself going. However, if you stick with it, you can begin to see results very early on and after a week or so, you're able to keep up with her with no problem. Want great abs and willing to work? This video is for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lost 8 pounds and 4 inches!, February 4, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Denise Austin - Super Stomachs [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This is the best workout tape out there. I did it about 3 times a week and within 3 months people I hardly knew were asking me if I had lost weight. After about 8 months of doing this video I have permanently lost 8 pounds and have gone from a size 8 to a 4. You MUST try this video.
