From the first track until the end, this CD is altogether compelling - the songs, the rhythms, and the brilliant singing. I don't know much about African music, so I bought this after hearing it reviewed on NPR - I havent' stopped listening to it since it arrived.

I have a discrete collection of West African music, but I found Mamar Kassey unique for their roots sound. It's possible to hear in it the Islamic influence of the hausa ethnie togheter with maalian and nigerian sound. I think this well recorded CD will be in few time one of the pearls of African Music. If you love Oumou Sangare, Orchestre National de Barbes, Ali Farka Toure, Toumani Diabate or King Sunny Ade, buy it immediately. I don't think Daqui records will be easy to found next year.

This is one of my favorite albums in any genre of music. The amplification of traditional instruments from the West African Sahel, accompanied by the vocals of Yacouba Moumouni, make this album absolutely riveting to listen to. The traditional stringed instruments and drums come through clearly and powerfully, not to mention Yacouba's flute playing. I feel like this album is an incredible tribute to the cultural traditions and musical styles that inspired it. I have the feeling that all involved in making this album were amazed at the outcome. It really is a work of art. I was a Peace Corps volunteer in Burkina Faso and made a trip to Zinder, Niger where I happened to buy this album on cassette. I treasured it as a rarity and was ecstatic when I discovered that it was available internationally, and in better sound quality. This album is an original right down to the album cover. It's hard to explain how much I appreciate it's musical genius and pulse. My feelings for the music are definitely deepened by having lived alongside the desert cultures of northern Burkina Faso not far from the border with Niger, but I think I would love this album regardless. Within all the modern musical production on this album that helps elevate the souls of Westerners, lies a continuation of ancient musical traditions and folklore, exemplified in the real life story of Yacouba Moumouni, and the legend of Mamar Kassey.

this is the second cd that was supposed to be brand new but it turned out to be a piece of junk.It keeps skiping and also appeared to be scratches when I received it.Would not recommend it also
