This review is from: Jack Dennis Western Trout Fly Tying Manual (Paperback)
I got my first copy of this book on a trip to Yellowstone, at Dan Bailey's fly shop. Years later, I gifted it to a friend who was just starting to tie his own flies, but sadly, has now quit fishing. So I found the newer version (spiral bound) on Amazon and was thrilled to once again be able to thumb through this fantastic volume at my liesure. Although it's been over 30 years since it was published, this book is timeless. Many of the patterns are still as useful today (maybe moreso since many anglers only use the "cutting edge" flies of the modern era) as they were in the '70s. Tying steps are clearly illustrated with black and white photos and each fly comes with a brief, entertaining and informative description of how, where, and when it works best. After reading through the first couple of patterns, you'll want to tie them all. This is a great book for those just starting, or those who want to catch a glimpse of what the west was like in that magical time of the late '70s.
