5.0 out of 5 stars Informative, detailed and more
Newcomers to jig fishing are going to learn a lot as well as the experienced angler. This book takes you all the way step by step. The book primarily relates to fliping and pitching, focusing on largemouth fishing. Tournament experiences are used to illustrate details of techniques and conditions on how to apply the jig for it's best potential. The stories and experiences...

3.0 out of 5 stars Good Book For Beginners, October 10, 2004
This review is from: Denny Brauer's Jig Fishing Secrets (Paperback)
The book is an easy read but the information about jig fishing for bass is rather basic. For the novice bass jig fisherman, I think the book would be very helpful. Appropriate tackle such as line, reels and rods are discussed as well seasonal approaches to jig fishing.

Overall, I thought the book lacked in detailed information. The diagrams and maps were quite rudimentary and Denny Brauer talked quite a bit about how his jig by "Strike King" is superior. Plugging his product prevented him from detailing how different jig designs might be a better choice in specific situations.

If you're an advanced bass fisherman, I can't recommend this book but if you're new to using jigs for bass, this book is a good start.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Sales Tactics, February 9, 2004

Watch out for the sales tactics. Ask yourself: "Is Strike King's jig that much better than other jigs?". I admit I fell for the sales pitch and ran out and bought the Strike King jigs that Denny mentions throughout the book but don't get sucked in like I did. I'm sure there's alternative jigs on sale that would work out just as good.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Practical Guide for Beginners, September 3, 2006
This review is from: Denny Brauer's Jig Fishing Secrets (Paperback)
I recommend this book if you are a jig fishing novice, or don't fish bass jigs, but would like to. If you're a proficient jig fisherman, you probably won't find much new material here. Call it "Jig Fishing 101", if you will.
Brauer takes the reader through proper jig selection, including size, color, skirts, trailers, etc. to match the conditions you're fishing, as well as equipment and techniques, and seasonal adjustments. Understandably, Brauer touts the jig he helped design for Strike King Lures that bears his name. I've used them and they work well. However, other jigs on the market also incorporate many of the design features Brauer deems important, such as a horizontal line tie, sharp needle-point hook, etc.
The thing I like about Denny Brauer is that he speaks to us in simple terms that anyone can understand. He's a good teacher. And most importantly, the man knows what he's talking about. For those who don't already know, Brauer is widely regarded as one of the best jig fisherman in the country. He's made his living doing it, as a professional bass fisherman. Why not learn from one of the best?
Like any other fishing technique, nothing can take the place of time on the water, but once you catch a few fish on a jig, your confidence grows, and like me, you'll have a jig tied on for each fishing trip.
Brauer's book is a worthwhile beginners guide. Hope this review was helpful.

5.0 out of 5 stars Denny's Secrets are Legit, November 24, 2008
This review is from: Denny Brauer's Jig Fishing Secrets (Paperback)
As a long time jig fisherman and bass enthusiast I was really pleased to finally make the commitment to read this book. I've known about it for years and thought I'd heard it all at least 2 times... Reality is that this man is the foremost authority on jig fishing and there is more than plenty to be learned from this book. It's entertaining, a bit of a commercial for Strike King jigs which are very good jigs to use by the way, and even more importantly a book that lays out the why, how, and when to use the jig which I'd bet a lot of people don't honestly know the answers to. If you want to catch bigger bass, use a jig and if it fits your style of fishing which is a more methodical approach this lure is one you should master or at least try to and reading this book will get you started and help you if you've been doing it for years as I have. It's an easy read, and some real how to logic is presented that just simply makes sense. Check it out.

4.0 out of 5 stars Brauer Makes a Strong Case for the Jig, September 3, 2008
This review is from: Denny Brauer's Jig Fishing Secrets (Paperback)
The three best things I got from this book are the jig must fall straight down to trigger the most strikes, you must be a keen line watcher to detect stikes; especially soft strikes, and third jigs catch bigger fish. I've proven this third statement to myself over and over again.

5.0 out of 5 stars An in-depth focus to fine tune your awareness of the tactic, April 7, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Denny Brauer's Jig Fishing Secrets (Paperback)
This book is deserving of all the critiques you have witnessed while reading through the below-listed user reviews. It is a retelling of tactics and technique basics that are by now well known, a product endorsement for Brauer's jigs and reels. In the times of lightning-fast media and the vlaue of endorsements in regards to one being a successful tournament angler, it should be far from a surprise that Denny Brauer's book shows these traits.

This book is old, written and delivered during a time when jig fishing was only breaking though as a successful tactic to those 'in the know,' and is a rather revolutionary meditation on all aspects of jig fishing. I think this book only comes across as monotonous because, as a tactic surviving for over twenty years in the limelight, all the little 'secrets' are no longer secrets to the majroity of the bass fishing world.

This all being said in defense, I was still blown away by this book, even as a fishermen that had already read and deciphered all their was to know abotu jig fishing. I consider this book to be much akin to a meditative exercise, a tool to help the reader focus on what it is to fish with a jig. It is nearly two hundred pages in length, covering EVERYTHING, and it is all gathered in to one spot. Kind of like a practice ACT test, it brings all you need to know to the forefront.

Where I think this book excels, and in a way that I have yet to see it accredited for, is that the author does a good job applying Brauer's own words and vernacular to on-water examples, allows Denny's stories from real-life occurences help the reader visually apply the facts in a real-world manner. What I mean is, you see Denny's thought processes in reflection to specific scenarios. And they are detailed rundowns, no generic "...deh waters murky so use something dark..." kind of references to conditions. He tells you of specific lakes, tournaments, water/weather conditions, speed and presentation of lures and why...and how these choices were changed in the next day of the tournament and why. Basically, His thought process is laid out to us as novice anglers, and I truly believe that is an EXTREMELY RARE insight into fishing. I have read thousands of pages on fishing this winter, and in no book have I came across this form of teaching.

All in all, yes, you have heard the barebones facts seen in this book in a hundred magazine articles by now. But, you have never seen them presented so in-depth and with so much natural thought...from the dude that helped pioneer the tactic. You don't just get the 'fish black and blue," sort of facts, but the, "I fish black and blue when the fish are______and the water temperature is______because I found out on Lake X that when..." The reasoning is delivered, the reasons why the facts of jig fishing are now facts and not theories. From the mouth of the inventor.

1.0 out of 5 stars What I wish I'd known BEFORE I purchased this book, January 21, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Denny Brauer's Jig Fishing Secrets (Paperback)
This book contains a few nuggets of good information, but for the price they were not worth it.
It reads like one long advertisement for the jig he designed for his sponsor. Reading it left a feeling
of being ripped-off.

4.0 out of 5 stars Denny Brauer's Jig fishing, December 1, 2010

This review is from: Denny Brauer's Jig Fishing Secrets (Paperback)
Denny is a great Jig Fisherman. I am sure anybody that knows Bass fishing Knows that. this book has some really good tips and a few little secrets that should improve anybody's game. I think there is a little too much about how he did in tournaments, but I did find I learned something from his experiences. I reccommend it to anyone wanting to learn or improve their techniques on jig fishing.
