4.0 out of 5 stars Chisound, November 5, 2008
By
William Pennix "Chisound" (Chicago, IL United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Denon AHC751K In-ear Headphones (Black) (Electronics)
I purchased the Denon AHC751 ear phone 3 weeks ago and have been using them almost everyday. I read countless reviews on the current ear-phones from Shure to Ultimate Ear and for the price these seemed to get the best user responses. I was previously using a set of Sony in-ear phones which I still like alot and cost half as much as the Denon's

The comment that was consistent with majority of reviews concerned the burn in time. The performance of the the phones out of the box were "hot" and changed over a period of use. I must agree. I found the high freq ranges were exaggerated and the bass was a bit "boomy". But as most of the other reviews mention, it settled down after approx. 10 hours of use.

The mids and highs compared to the sony were a mild improvement but an improvement nonetheless. I am mildly disappointed in the bass. It is has a nice response to the low end freq but not quite what I was hoping for. I guess my Sony's weren't that bad after all. I guess that is just the draw back to in-ear phones. They have a clean bass response but if you are looking for head-vibrating bass, these aren't the head phone for you.

There are 3 sizes to choose from in ear pieces. Take your time choosing which size is best for you. If the phones are not seated properly, you won't get the true range of the phones. I actually wear different sizes on each ear. Don't be afraid to experiment.

In perfect quiet conditions, on-ear phones possess an overall better sound quality. But if you are looking for noise isolation in a compact format for an on the go life style you can't go wrong with these.

4.0 out of 5 stars Same product as the Denon C700, with some added accesories, April 10, 2008

This review is from: Denon AHC751K In-ear Headphones (Black) (Electronics)
From sites such as [...], I wanted to note that these are apparently the same IEMs as the well-reviewed Denon C700, with some accessories (extension headphone cord, case) included. I would suggest reading reviews for the Denon C700 here and on headfi to aid in your decision.

At the current time the C751s with included accessories are selling for less than the C700, so check the prices for both and choose accordingly.

I will add further details on my impressions on this model (compared to my current Senn CX300) after I have had some more time to evaluate them.

*** Update 04/29/07 - THIRD time trying to update this review, not clear why Amazon keeps ignoring my updates ....

Now that I've had a chance to try the Denon C751 headphones for an extended period, I have to say that I am quite happy with them and recommend them highly for those who prefer the sound signature they provide (see details below).

Build quality - excellent. The phones themselves are made of machined aluminum and appear relatively sturdy for their light weight. The cord is also more substantial than that on some portable headphones I have seen. The cord itself is a "Y" configuration (left and right the same length). The cord is only about 20" long but is supplied with a 35" extension cord (this differs from the C700 which had a longer "main" cord but no extension). I personally like this setup, but of course YMMV.

Sound - First off, THESE MUST HAVE A LONG BURN-IN PERIOD before they reach their potential. On first listen the midrange and lower treble is very forward to the point of being harsh, esp. on material that has a lot of midrange to begin with. After 20 hours or so of burn-in the midrange and lower treble softened up quite a bit.

If fitted properly (this is essential for any IEM), the bass is deep but tight (no boom-boom like my previous pair of Sennheiser CX300s); devoted "bass heads" may want to look elsewhere, however. The midrange and lower treble is still forward but quite listenable, and does an excellent job with vocals. And though my ears are getting a bit old to hear upper treble frequencies, I don't hear anything objectionable in these headphones. These remind me a bit of my Senn HD-595s, though the Denons are still bit more forward-sounding.

Fit - OK at best with the stock plugs. I had a bit of difficulty getting a good seal with any of the stock Denon plugs. This problem was solved by replacing the plugs with those from my old Senn CX300s. Other people (on [...]) suggest Sony or Comply plugs.

Other stuff - The C751 comes with a small zippered case if you case about such things. Microphonics (hearing your footsteps or breathing while wearing IEMs) is present but less noticeable than on my previous CX300s. Due to the ported / open design of the Denons, isolation is not as complete as for other IEMs; someone sitting next to you in a very quiet room *may* be able to hear what you are listening to, and some outside sounds will be evident.

Conclusion - highly recommended. I'm sticking with fours stars due to the burn-in requirement, forward sound that may not appeal to all, mediocre plugs provided.

4.0 out of 5 stars Yes, they do have good bass, January 20, 2009
By
This review is from: Denon AHC751K In-ear Headphones (Black) (Electronics)
I think the most important feature of earbud headphones is how well they can produce low end sound, and fortunately the 751K does this quite well. The bass is not boomy like some cheaper earbuds that accentuate low frequencies; the 751K accurately reproduces how the bass should sound in the recording. But to get good bass make sure to try the different earpieces to get the best fit, and then cram the buds as far as you can into your ear. Source quality is also important (I use apple lossless).

The construction quality is good and I actually am using the case this time because I'm tired of my earbuds breaking. I like that they come with an extender cable because that's the part that always breaks (the part that connects to the music player). So if the extender breaks I can just buy a new one instead of having to replace the entire headset. I also like that the left earbud has a small notch on the side so I can tell that it is the left bud without looking. They are comfortable but I think that the Sure SE110 felt a little better

But compared to Sure's SE110, the 751K has much, much better bass but unfortunately does not have quite as good high-end as the SE110. In fact, sometimes the high frequencies on the 751K are harsh sounding, notably with vocals on the "s" sounds.

Compared to the VMODA earbuds, the bass on the 751K is not as prominent but is much clearer and more accurate. The overall sound of the 751K is far and away better than the VMODA, but you also are spendig 5 times the money.

My reason for 4 stars is that the upper frequencies are not as good as I'd expect for a headset is this price range. The shrilling sound from some vocal tracks can be annoying, especially at high volume. But the overall sound quality is much better than anything you can get for equal or lesser cost (I've tried panasonic, sure, sony, VMODA, and AKG in the $30-$100 price range). I probably would have to spend 2 or 3 hundred to get the sound I'm looking for, but for now I'm satisfied.
