Great system once you tweak the settings,

This review is from: Denon DHT487-DV 5.1-Channel DVD Home Theater System (Electronics)
I got this system because it was highly rated on several sites, and because it was one of the lowest cost sets that has two optical inputs on the back of the receiver (the only way to confirm that before buying was to check Crutchfield's site.) I concur that it is worthy of a high rating; I go on to explain why it didn't get five stars from me.
I used to be the type who would read my user manuals cover to cover, but then I grew up and suddenly didn't have time anymore. The receiver that comes with this kit is one device that you will need to actually read your manual to get the most out of it. For instance, out of the box, the receiver is set up to not use the subwoofer for stereo signals. That's because the front-left and front-right speakers are set to "large," which means they don't need subwoofer help. But the speakers that come in the kit are clearly in need of subwoofer help. The troubleshooting guide covers subwoofer problems, but not this problem. So I had to read through everything to figure out what might be wrong. At least I figured it out, though, and I'm happy with the sound. Another quirk is that if you hold down a volume button on the remote, the volume changes too quickly, so you're likely to overshoot the volume you want. I'm getting used to it, but it's still very difficult to get the volume just right. Maybe the manual has something to say on this too. (The device is very configurable; that's definitely a plus.)

Sad end to the Receiver,

After 2.5 years of light use the main component gave up the ghost - six months after the warranty expired. I would stay away from this one and probably Denon products.

This is my first time buying HTIB.I have been looking into HTIB systems for some times. Living in an apartment,my choice was limited to smaller but powerful systems. I looked at Yamaha YHT-380 first then saw Sony DAV-IS10 on craiglist for cheaper price. I was going toward Sony until tech savvy coworker suggested Denon system. My order arrived quickly and I was amazed how hugh the package was. Set up was not difficult since I downloaded the manual a week before and study all the connections and plan ahead. I connected my motorola HD DVR through composite and DVD through HDMI. Only thing confused me was A and B on speakers setup. After the set up, I thought I was missing two more speakers for surround. Since this receiver doesn't have auto tune up like other system, I spent entire day turning up, shifting speakers locations. Having listened only 2.1 system before, this 5.1 system just blown me away. Subwoofer was strong enough to rattled my windows. The song is quite clean and crisp. Nelly Furtado song better than my JVC stereo system. Enya CD song so good I almost fall a sleep. Only negative thing was the system doesn't have HDMI connection only the DVD player included has HDMI. I later found out this system has been discontinued. latest av receiver has 2 HDMI in and 1 HDMI out but not really problem, composite connection wasn't bad at all.I probably upgrade the receiver when I have enough experience and extra money. I felt the system package was alittle bit pricy since you can buy better Denon receiver for $349 at Amazon. I think not bad for 3 packages of receiver, dvd player and speakers. I would recommand this system for newbie like me.

Denon DHT487-DV 5.1-Channel DVD Home Theater System,
This review is from: Denon DHT487-DV 5.1-Channel DVD Home Theater System (Electronics)
This package is really solid. It is Denon's early move into the "HT in a Box" concept, plus some legendary quality from Denon. Sounds wonderful, components are high quality, plenty enough headroom for a 18 x 22 w/ vaulted wood ceiling room. The satellites are a very nice smaller but beefy build. The control interface is not very intuitive is my only complaint. The powered subwoofer is strong and very controllable. Honestly however, I am not overly experienced in HT, but I do know what I like! Strongly Recommended!

I have had this system for a couple months now and am 100% satisfied.. Just make sure you get the most out of this system by getting Quality cables.. My TV does not support HDMI but it does Support Component Cables.. Those are a must for the DVD Player as is an Fiber Optic Audio cable.. Unbelievable sound when used with the right cables for a system of this price range.

This was the best value I found in home theater systems. The amplifier is well constructed and uses a massive transformer in it's power supply, not a cheap switching supply that box systems use. The speakers sound great for their size and the sub is powerful enough to shake the walls (and annoy the neighbors if you live in an apartment like me).

I have had this system for a few days now. My other system is a Sony Dream system. The differences between the Sony and the Denon are huge. It really isn't fair to compare the Denon to the Sony I guess. The Denon's sound is amazing. It really makes you feel like you are in the movie. It is a true surround experience. I have a room that is about 20 x 20, and the speakers do a great job. The sub is also pretty crisp and clear. I can turn the volume up as loud as I want without any distortion at all. (and I like my movies loud!) I highly recommend this system to anyone looking for a really unbelievable value.
The only negative I can say is that eventually I will upgrade the Subwoofer...it could be a little crisper, but it is definately very adequate. It is probably 5 times better than the sub that came with my Sony system. I just really like crisp, clean bass that I can really feel. I do not feel at all that I need to be in a hurry to upgrade the sub...just someday when I have the extra money. I really feel like I will be happy with this system for a long time.

I recently purchased this system from local store. It came with 3 individual packages for DVD 557 player, AVR-487 receiver and SYS 57HT speaker system. Setup not very easy, but the receiver is fully configurable. take few days to understand completely how the system works and to calibrate the sound. DVD player upconvert to 1080i and play a razor sharp pictures after tweak the setup menu. Sound amazing in my opinion. Able to produce dolby prologic II surround sound even from analog audio signal. Other audio capability include but not limited to DTS, DTS-ES, Dolby prologic II, Dolby Prologic IIx (cinema, music, etc), neural Surround. Bass deep enough to rattle your windows & wall, treble was crystal clear. Highly recommended.

This is an excellent entry level in-the-box system. The receiver and dvd/cd/mp3 player are good. The speakers are good as well. I am very pleased with the system and it was extremely affordable.

We have had this system for two weeks and it has the best sound I have heard on a system less then $1500. And the xmradio optional is great.
