Excellent stereo sound quality,
This review is from: Denon DRA-297 AM/FM Satellite-Ready Stereo Receiver (Electronics)
I was looking for a stereo (2-channel) receiver to mainly listen to classical music (CDs and an FM classical music radio channel) and to connect to my DVD player to watch old movies (Bergman's for example). I figured that multi (>2)-channel receivers would be a waste of money and thus focused on investigating reasonably good quality stereo receivers. The final comparison came down to Harman Kardon HK 3490 2 x 120W Stereo Receiver and Denon DRA-297 AM/FM Satellite-Ready Stereo Receiver. From the outside HK 3490 has a more modern look than Denon 297, but the former is bulkier. Notice that the HK supplies 120W whereas the Denon offers 50W per channel. Connected to two Kplisch Synergy speakers in the store and as a non-audiophile, I couldn't distinguish the difference between the two receivers. I decided to purchase Denon eventually because of its good reputation from mid-range receivers. Now, the unit is connected to two fantastic and beyond-expectation Definitive Technology StudioMonitor 350 Speakers (Pair, Black). Recommended by my physicist father-in-law, I connect the speakers and the receiver unit with generic 12-gauge copper wires (from RadioShack). Sitting in our small living room (~ 300 sq. feet), the system produces a crisp, clean sound yet with a rich bass for CD-/DVD- playback. The bass is generated by the extremely low frequency (as low as 26Hz) side bass/midrange driver of the speakers. Signal receiving of our favorite FM classical music radio channel is also excellent after the included FM antenna was well-positioned. My wife and I are highly satisfied with the system, especially given the budgetary amount we paid.

One of the last standing, good-sounding analogue amps in this price range. I doubt you can get better sounding amp under $300. I bought this as a preamp tp drive my powered speakers in the living room. It has pre-out and works like a charm. I just wish the remote can be a little simpler and smaller. Like those true hifi component remotes, you know, just volume and source selections would be fine.

Denon DRA-297 Stereo Audio Receiver
I have to admit that I am a female who is "electronically challenged", so choosing a receiver as a surprise gift for my husband was a bit frightening. I did some research and shopped on various websites before I found this receiver. After reading about it and the reviews, I decided to give this one a try. I had to make a few calls to the seller before I received it, made contact with no problem, and was treated respectfully. My husband was thrilled with the receiver and immediately installed it and connected all other electronic "gizmos" to it. He did mention that there are features on it that he will probably not use, but in my opinion it's better to have too many, than too little. Even though this receiver is refurbished, you would never know it. This is a great receiver at a really great price. Thanks!

Worked great until 2 years after purchase, then .... POW!!! No more receiver. Nice while it lasted but too expensive to buy every couple of years. My pioneer receiver is over 15 years old and still works in my den this DENON was a cool new replacement until it quit working today.
