5.0 out of 5 stars Great machine for the price
I have my Denon DVD1730 connected to a 1080i LCD HDTV via HDMI cable. Picture quality is tack sharp on upconversion to 1080i. Movies look like candy. For the price it is a great machine.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Frustrating Disappointment
Having a Denon Receiver, I know first hand the quality of Denon Products. This player lives up to that rep so long as you feed it factory disks. On home recorded movies, it won't reliably read +R DL. Several brands of discs were tried and none of them played 100% of the time. Don't hesitate to buy Denon, it is a great product. However, if you use +R DL discs you might...

1.0 out of 5 stars Sad experience..., June 3, 2007
This review is from: Denon DVD-1740 Progressive Scan DVD/CD Player (Electronics)
I bought a Denon 1730 DVD player yeah it was dead in about 45 days from purchase. Tech Support says send it in we will fix it.. after 4 weeks I receive a 'factory refurbished' (laugh) unit that has scratches on it and growls like a pit bull all the time, on ANY disk. Sounds like the motor is unbalanced or has a bad bearing. So after failing to build it (the one I bought) right and then failing to fix it I get one that they failed to build right and they failed to fix AND it has scratches on it. 4 Failures ... not very impressive. What is Denons answer to this? 'Send it back we'll try to fix it again' for an additional 4-6 weeks. I told them I no longer want any of their product and I have asked for my $ back and expect a long fight over that.

Do lemon laws apply in a case like this?

I understand getting a bad product from a good company but how long am I supposed to wait for them to make it right? I bought it 12/31/06 and used it to mid Feb, then used it to March if it decided to work that day.

Tech Support is running through the standard tech script and I am tired of it.

5.0 out of 5 stars DENON DVD-1730 DVD PLAYER, March 24, 2007
This review is from: Denon DVD-1740 Progressive Scan DVD/CD Player (Electronics)
This is my second Denon DVD Player and I was surprised to find out how little it weighs when I picked it up. However, even though it isn't heavy, it still has that Denon quality build. Once I got it connected using a DVD-D to HDMI Cable for Video and a Digital Optical Audio Cable for Audio I was amazed at how clear both the picture and the audio are.
I am using a Samsung DLP Monitor and I was really impressed on how much better the Up-Converting Video (to 720P) is on ALL DVD's that I have tried so far. Today, I tried just playing a CD to see how that does and again, the sound quality is outstanding with the Digital Audio Cable. I would recommend this DVD Player to anyone, especially if they have a HDTV.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great product when new!, April 4, 2009
This review is from: Denon DVD-1740 Progressive Scan DVD/CD Player (Electronics)
I purchased this up-converting DVD player when my parents just purchased a 32" Samsung LCD 1080P. I was younger when I purchased it and didn't really do enough research, great price for the time but could have purchased something better for the money.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good but doesn't read SACD, December 12, 2008
This review is from: Denon DVD-1740 Progressive Scan DVD/CD Player (Electronics)
It's a good DVD but doens't read SACD. That's why i changed for a 1940 Denon DVD, that's read SACD and has more resources. If you just want to have a good DVD and doens't need to read SACD, Denon 1740 it's an excellent option, affordable and best cost benefits.

After three attempts at getting a midrange dvd player (mid $80 range) and not getting a single one that did not have issues, finally went up scale and found it was worth the money. Plays all the dvd without problems, loads much faster, upscaling is great.

4.0 out of 5 stars Denon Homey, May 30, 2007

Can't disagree with the other reviewers. This is my second bought specifically for the component and optical options (sorry - no feedback on the HDMI capabilities yet). I am happy with the look, the feel, the onscreen setup and especially with the picture through my Panasonic AE100 projector. Unfortunately I had to pay NZ$370, so at the US$ price you're getting a good bargin for a standard DVD player.

5.0 out of 5 stars No Competition ,,, Plays Anything & Everything !!!, March 21, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Denon DVD-1740 Progressive Scan DVD/CD Player (Electronics)
I purchased this item a couple of years ago ,,, right here ,,, and now ,,, I am back for another !!!

I own about a thousand ,,, probably more ,,, DVD's and I don't get put-off by that "Region" stuff i.e. Canada, Japan. Europe, Antarctica ,,, well maybe not Antarctica.

Sooo ,,, when I bought DVDs that played like poop on my Magnavox :-( ,,, I was momentarily pooped ,,, until I thought of my Denon connected to my Stereo. So I tried them in my Denon ,,, and needless to say the "troubled" Dvds played flawlessly, AWESOME! I was pumped !!!

And this beast has like "six" yes "6" fast-forward" speeds !!! DANG !!!

Without a doubt ,,, [and I am an old codger at 65] ,,, this baby has NO EQUAL.

And the mechanism, the electro-mechanics ,,, outstanding !!! and very QUIET !!! Example: Like the door is on rubber rollers !!!

-You will not be disappointed !!! I guarantee !!! :-)

5.0 out of 5 stars darn good, March 25, 2008
I was unprepared for how good the Denon DVD-1740 would be. The quality of the upconversion is just great.
