5.0 out of 5 stars Nice multiformat player, few quirks., November 26, 2005

This review is from: Denon DVD-2910S Progressive Scan/Scaling DVD Player (Silver) (Electronics)
This is a really nice multi-format player. The most impressive part of this unit is its DVD-video performance. It upsamples DVD's to 720p, which makes for great viewing on a suitable high def monitor (as a point of reference, i own a pioneer pdp-4350). An HDMI interface is available.

For music, the unit's internal upsampling D/A converter is effective. You also have the ability to send out the digital signal for outboard processing; I tried this using a musical fidelity x-dac v3, and there was no discernible difference in quality. CDs, SACDs and DVD-As all sound great on this machine, so don't believe anyone that suggests this $700 unit can't match higher priced, dedicated CD-only or multi-format units. Audio-snobbery is out of control, so don't let it get to you. This unit easily performs to the level of a higher priced Classe or Rega or meridian unit. If you don't believe me, do a properly controlled test where the listener is blinded to the source.

The unit has extensive audio and video menus, so I would suggest going through those once you plug it in. At the least, you'll have to turn on the HDMI output through this setup menu. Finally, the build quality of this unit is very satisfactory. I recommend the silver finish.

Couple of quirks: I've noticed that for dual discs, it often does not recognize the CD side. For example, John Mayer's "Heavier Things" dual disc works on the DVD-A side, but the CD side is not recognized. Otherwise, I've had no problem with single format CD, DVD-A or SACD discs.

Also, the remote is kinda clunky and uninspiring. I'd suggest using an effective universal remote, if only for aesthetics.
