Sound Quality: Excellent.

The mic is very good and the audio controls work very well with an iPhone to play/pause, change volume and skip ahead or skip back.

The key to getting a good sound from ear buds is getting the right sized tip to fit your ear canal.

I tend to go back and forth between around-ear and in-ear headphones. While around-ear tends to be "en vogue" right now (apparently with a contest of "s/he who has the biggest cans, wins!"), there is nothing like in-ear for portability, unobtrusiveness and truly blocking sounds from the outside world. When you get a good seal with a great pair of in-ear ear buds, the outside world melts away and you are left with your music. This is to say nothing of the fact that they are just much more comfortable in terms of weight and footprint -- you can wear glasses comfortably with in-ear headphones and you aren't adding a bunch of weight that can be very fatiguing for long periods of times.

I have tried many different brands of in-ear headphones: Shure E500PTH Sound Isolating Earphones, Monster Turbine High Performance In-Ear Speakers (127593) - Black, and Grado GR10s... this if my first pair of Denon in-ears. I have tried and over-ear Denon Music Maniac line and frankly, I didn't care for them as much as the comparable Shures so frankly, I didn't have very high expectations for the in-ear headphones.

First thing you will notice is that Denon does focus on "initial impressions" -- unboxing earbuds and headphones these days is more elaborate than the packaging of a 1 carat diamond ring. The box looks important. The leather zipper storage case is luxurious... your usual assortment of tips (though I was disappointed that they don't offer the triple-flange tips because for me, those stay in the best and block the most noise.

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
The AH-C250s are the entry-level in-ear monitors from Denon's Music Maniac line. They are designed for the audiophile market with balanced armature drivers for neutral and detailed sound reproduction. Although I was at first a bit taken aback by the very striking visual design, the audio quality is every bit as good as one would expect from a respected audio engineering company.

The sound is indeed very balanced with no over-emphasis on bass. When testing them at higher volumes, I found the upper-range vocals more aggressive in limiting the comfortable volume, rather than booming from the lower range instruments.

Detail is excellent throughout and problems with the quality of the original recording or excessively lossy file compression are definitely going to be noticeable. There are no remarkable defects from the earphones, certainly no sibilance or crispness or muddiness. Any false alarms were inherent to the recording.

The sound stage is quite good in all dimensions but perhaps more capable in width over depth. Isolation is very good with well-fitting tips, although even the large tips fit fairly deep in my ear canals.

The industrial design is very assertive, even Terminator-like, with polished die-cast zinc and black accents, and it complements my iPod and other electronics. The unusual cables appear to be clear vinyl over woven metal. They are coated with Teflon and simply do not tangle—this is amazing. The on-cord controls work extremely well although the more complex commands require memorizing Morse code-like combinations of short and long presses.

Balanced armature IEMs can be heavy but these are quite comfortable in the ear and are easy to insert and remove.

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
Everything about these headphones shouts quality. Most importantly, they have an amazingly clear sound. The audiophile term is transparent; they add nothing and take away very little. With an accurate, live recording, what you hear from them is what you would hear if you were there.

One aspect I particularly appreciate, and others may love them or hate them for this, is the accuracy of their bass response. Some less expensive headphones, and even a few more expensive ones, are designed to "punch" the lower end, sometimes by unnatural amounts.

For example, one recording I use while evaluating headphones is of a heartbeat. It's a great source for low frequency, low volume, non-steady sounds. Some lower end headphones I have manage to turn these soft, subtle sounds into what you would expect from a bass drum. I have higher end headphones that don't distort the volume so much but still don't get a sound that is natural. These manage to get everything right. That accuracy extends across the spectrum.

As to the other aspects of these headphones:

* The cord is over four feet long and tangle free.
* The audio/phone control buttons are easy to feel and provide good feedback when pressed.
* Callers had no problem l hearing me when I used the microphone.
* Siri had no trouble understanding me when I used voice commands.
* This is the best fit I've had with ear gels of this type. (More on this later)
* The packaging is also appropriately high quality. This is important if you are giving this as a gift.

So how, you ask, did I improve these headphones for a few dollars? The problem is I have never been able to use the round, press-in ear gels that are included with these headphones.
