Brilliant Composer and Great Player,
By Robin Schmidt (Ithaca, NY USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Denouement (Audio CD)
This is a great CD! I am impressed, Andrew York is both a wonderful composer and great player. I saw him live and it was amazing. I really like York's compositions: they are modern, but not in a dissonant way; they are beautiful, yet sophisticated; they are pleasant, yet very engaging and emotionally complex. If you want to hear great unique classical guitar, get some Andrew York!

Exercises - and More,
By
This review is from: Denouement (Audio CD)
This set of pieces is in many ways constructed like exercises for guitarists. But with York's gift for melody and the unexpected turn it's much more than that. Very listenable, and as always, the playing is superb.

I'm listing to this cd right now and holy speakers batman, I want to start a happy dance right now!!! These songs are so much more fun to play than the ones in method books. My favorite tracks are Faire and Bagtelle. I can't even imagine being able to compose music like this. Andrew York is my friggin' hero!

These are wonderful compositions for solo guitar. They are intellectually stimulating and stand up to a careful listen, but also make for pleasant background music. York has put together a nice progression from classically inspired works to more free-form exercises, without getting lost in either extreme. I find myself listening to this album several times per week, and I imagine that I will continue to do so for some time. My only small complaint concerns the accompanying booklet. Although York provides fascinating background information to some of his compositions, as well as poetic and insightful comments on the role of the artist in our time, there are a couple of grammar and spelling mistakes in the booklet that create an impression of carelessness and lack of professionalism, completely at odds with the perfection of the music. However, this is a minor detail and does not detract in the least from this fine CD. I highly recommend it.

Windom Hill Misses Gucci,
By
This review is from: Denouement (Audio CD)
This CD reveals two things about York: he's not a composer and he needs a wardrobe change. The compositions are trite little minatures that belong on a Windom Hill Sampler: cute, but hardly brilliant. Save yer money.
