Way better than my last guard!, May 16, 2007
This review is from: Dental Hygiene Preferred Complete Day/Night Mouth Guard Kit, Colors may vary (Health and Beauty)
I first purchased "The Doctor's Night Guard" at my local drugstore, for around $20.00. Not a bad price, but the guard felt like a hockey puck in my mouth, it was so huge and clunky. And I bought the smallest size! Plus it fell out of my mouth every night (and I never knew when) so it didn't seem worth keeping when it didn't even stay put.
I came across this guard and decided to try it because the reviews were so good. I have to say I am extremely pleased with not only the price, but the customer service was good (very good communication and fast shipping) and most importantly, the guard is SMALL but still does the job and stays put all night. My only other option was to drop $500 at my dentist for a custom one, but I think this is a much better deal!

Great instructions, nice that it comes with two guards, March 3, 2008
This review is from: Dental Hygiene Preferred Complete Day/Night Mouth Guard Kit, Colors may vary (Health and Beauty)
I've been using night guards for over 20 years, but this is the first time I've tried an off-the-shelf variety. I wasn't sure how they could compare to the expensive custom-fitted ones from the dentist -- but I've been wearing through the expensive ones way too fast lately!
The directions are very clear, which is nice. I've gone through this process to make mouthguards with my children for martial arts sparring, so I had a general idea how it worked. But it was nice to have such precise instructions. It comes with two guards, which don't seem all that different at first glance, but the larger one is more massive -- when you boil them, they keep their shape in the pot, but they get very soft and kind of sticky. So when you bite down on them, they can almost completely change their shape. The larger one thus has more plastic, or whatever, for forming a guard for a larger mouth/larger teeth (I used the small one). The nice thing about the forming process is that this stuff doesn't have that gelled-kerosene-like flavor of the molds the dentists use!
According to the instructions, you can re-boil the guard a couple of times without damage, so if you don't get it right the first time it's OK. Even so, my final product isn't as pretty as the custom ones, but I figure that even if I buy a couple of these a year, I'll come out ahead.
And I know, from many years of experience, that I'll sleep a LOT better with a guard in place. If you have grinding issues, it's worth a try! Do be sure you know what you are doing though, check with your doctor if you are concerned about TMJ (temporo-mandibular joint problems -- pain around your ears or your temples, for example -- this will prevent further wear and tear but not treat damage that has already occurred). Good luck and thanks for reading.
Update, a few months later: This one worked well enough, stayed in nicely and protected my jaws and teeth and helped me sleep better and all that, but it did get kind of worn out or chewed up inside. So I am trying the Archtek Grind Guard, which seems so far to be of a firmer "plastic" and which may hold up longer.

Comfortable and Effective Night Guard, September 5, 2007
This review is from: Dental Hygiene Preferred Complete Day/Night Mouth Guard Kit, Colors may vary (Health and Beauty)
I had a $300 custom night guard from my dentist which was hard plastic and not very comfortable due to saliva collecting in the guard behind my front teeth. I tried this inexpensive guard and was able to use the smaller size which is effective even though it doesn't cover all the way to the back teeth. Still it is snug and effective in keeping my teeth apart and it is soft and comfortable. Try this and try the smaller size first. I thought it may be too small for me but I was wrong and the smaller size is definitely more comfortable.
