5.0 out of 5 stars Way better than my last guard!
I first purchased "The Doctor's Night Guard" at my local drugstore, for around $20.00. Not a bad price, but the guard felt like a hockey puck in my mouth, it was so huge and clunky. And I bought the smallest size! Plus it fell out of my mouth every night (and I never knew when) so it didn't seem worth keeping when it didn't even stay put.

I came across this...

1.0 out of 5 stars Once again let down by good Amazon reviews
This comes with two different sizes. One that's too big and one that's too small. If you happen to get a good fit consider yourself lucky. The big one I tried to trim down as much as possible but it was still way too bulky. The small one doesn't extend far enough back to cover my teeth. One thing you should be weary of is that these are so bulky that the material will...

5.0 out of 5 stars Way better than my last guard!, May 16, 2007

I came across this guard and decided to try it because the reviews were so good. I have to say I am extremely pleased with not only the price, but the customer service was good (very good communication and fast shipping) and most importantly, the guard is SMALL but still does the job and stays put all night. My only other option was to drop $500 at my dentist for a custom one, but I think this is a much better deal!

I've been using night guards for over 20 years, but this is the first time I've tried an off-the-shelf variety. I wasn't sure how they could compare to the expensive custom-fitted ones from the dentist -- but I've been wearing through the expensive ones way too fast lately!

The directions are very clear, which is nice. I've gone through this process to make mouthguards with my children for martial arts sparring, so I had a general idea how it worked. But it was nice to have such precise instructions. It comes with two guards, which don't seem all that different at first glance, but the larger one is more massive -- when you boil them, they keep their shape in the pot, but they get very soft and kind of sticky. So when you bite down on them, they can almost completely change their shape. The larger one thus has more plastic, or whatever, for forming a guard for a larger mouth/larger teeth (I used the small one). The nice thing about the forming process is that this stuff doesn't have that gelled-kerosene-like flavor of the molds the dentists use!

According to the instructions, you can re-boil the guard a couple of times without damage, so if you don't get it right the first time it's OK. Even so, my final product isn't as pretty as the custom ones, but I figure that even if I buy a couple of these a year, I'll come out ahead.

And I know, from many years of experience, that I'll sleep a LOT better with a guard in place. If you have grinding issues, it's worth a try! Do be sure you know what you are doing though, check with your doctor if you are concerned about TMJ (temporo-mandibular joint problems -- pain around your ears or your temples, for example -- this will prevent further wear and tear but not treat damage that has already occurred). Good luck and thanks for reading.

Update, a few months later: This one worked well enough, stayed in nicely and protected my jaws and teeth and helped me sleep better and all that, but it did get kind of worn out or chewed up inside. So I am trying the Archtek Grind Guard, which seems so far to be of a firmer "plastic" and which may hold up longer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Comfortable and Effective Night Guard, September 5, 2007
This review is from: Dental Hygiene Preferred Complete Day/Night Mouth Guard Kit, Colors may vary (Health and Beauty)
I had a $300 custom night guard from my dentist which was hard plastic and not very comfortable due to saliva collecting in the guard behind my front teeth. I tried this inexpensive guard and was able to use the smaller size which is effective even though it doesn't cover all the way to the back teeth. Still it is snug and effective in keeping my teeth apart and it is soft and comfortable. Try this and try the smaller size first. I thought it may be too small for me but I was wrong and the smaller size is definitely more comfortable.

For years I have suffered from migraines, inner ear infections, etc. I have been to countless doctors and even had an MRI, but couldn't get a diagnosis that made sense.
I was in for my regular dental checkup (new dentist) and she diagnosed me with TMJ. It can cause all of the above problems I've been having.
Well, my dentist wanted me to be fitted for a night guard that would prevent my teeth clenching at night. It was priced at $480!!!!! I don't have insurance.
Well, that night I went on Amazon and found this product. For less than $20!!!
I've been using it for several weeks now. I can't believe the change it has made in my life. No headaches so far, no more jaw pain, and my ear is clearing up.
THANK YOU THANK YOU for making a product that people can easily afford!!!!!
I would recommend that people try this night guard before spending big bucks on the custom ones.

Prior to buying this product, I spent $400 at the dentist for an acrylic night guard. I wore it out in less than two years, and was facing buying another. This product, on the other hand, is far less expensive, much more comfortable, performs just as advertised, and doesn't even have the worrisome off-taste of a new acrylic appliance. It is so affordable that I could wear it out frequently, but that hasn't happened yet.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good for the price, May 17, 2007
This review is from: Dental Hygiene Preferred Complete Day/Night Mouth Guard Kit, Colors may vary (Health and Beauty)
I had an expensive dentist-made mouthguard for years until my dog ate it. I needed a quick fix, so bought a $25-30 from Walgreens. It was alright, but bulky, a little uncomfortable, and left my mouth consistently dry in the mornings. This mouthguard is a great value for the price, but I wish that it had a sturdier bottom. It is comfortable, more realistically sized, and does not leave my mouth so dry. It's not as good as my dentist-made mouthguard, but gets the job done, and is very cheap.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dental Hygiene Mouth Guard Kit, August 31, 2006

I had never used one of these mouth guards before so I really don't have a comparison. However, this item was very inexpensive, easy to use, and with two sizes contained within the package, I was able to have a mouth guard that fit my small mouth perfectly. I needed a mouth guard because a new medication prescribed to me had a side effect of jaw clenching. I used the mouth guard until I got used to the medication. It completely did the trick and helped make me more comfortable during the transition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just as good & cheaper!, August 18, 2007

I logged on to shop and end up writing a review for a dvd ;-) then I thought I'd write my review for this while I'm at it! This is as good as the "Doctors night guard" for cheaper. If you are a hard core grinder like I'm told I am...I thought of a good trick to make these last longer (I'm lucky if mine lasts 2 months) do NOT boil first! it's not as comfortable but think about it, when you boil you are biting half way through it to form. Without boiling it's twice as thick and should last twice as long right? if someone knows for a FACT this is bad please "comment". I never read comments as I don't care if someone agrees or not (too bitchy?) but will try to remember to check back. Maybe I'll just surf for answer...anyway do buy this much cheaper guard that's actually a two pack!

This comes with two different sizes. One that's too big and one that's too small. If you happen to get a good fit consider yourself lucky. The big one I tried to trim down as much as possible but it was still way too bulky. The small one doesn't extend far enough back to cover my teeth. One thing you should be weary of is that these are so bulky that the material will extend far past your teeth onto your gums. This will cause your gums to recede over time. It also doesn't extend up into the roof of your mouth very well which results in a thick plastic edge which your tongue will use to push it out. Trimming the material didn't make much difference since it's basically too thick to wear. I guess everyone else had better luck than me.

Needed a mouth guard due to grinding of teeth. My TMJ muscles where out of place, face was in extreme pain. This mouth guard helped during the healing process. Still wear it every night. Would purchase again, can't beat the price compared to what you have to pay elsewhere.
