4.0 out of 5 stars Pleased with my purchase
The venus fly trap plant arrived at my apartment only 3 days after ordering it, which was a nice surprise. It came planted in a small pot, and the entire plant was wrapped in newspaper and then packed in those styrofoam packing peanuts. Apparently fly traps have a dormancy period during the winter so my plant does look flattened down, but still healthy and alive. Note:...

3.0 out of 5 stars Dente flytrap or the typical flytrap?
I have to give three stars for my order from Hirts. I am unsatisfied with two folds.

One is that the arrived plant is the typical venus flytrap, not the 'dente' venus flytrap. The typical venus flytrap is the most common one among flytraps. But the 'dente' venus flytrap has jawlike 'teeth' along the trap edge.

Second, the shipping method needs to improve. The arrived plant is dying, because it is buried by the soil during the mailing. All its leaves tightly stick to the soil.

However, after careful care, the little plant is thriving and growing four new leaves after 3 weeks.

Here are my suggestions to the growers:

One, don't expect the plant will arrive at your home in good condition. But you can make it thrive.

Two, you 'must' do some research to know how to grow it. You cannot use the tap water and ordinary plant soils. Also, you need to provide enough moist and sunlight for flytraps. The book: The Savage Garden: Cultivating Carnivorous Plants (by Peter D'Amato), has good guidance on how to plant all the carnivorous plants.

Third, although the shipping is bad for flytrap, the seller ships other carnivorous plants in good methods (this is strange). So, if you plan to buy other carnivorous plants (such as Sarracenia, Drosera, Nepenthes), you can trust this seller and your plants will arrive in a good condition. Actually, I have bought some pitch plants and sundew from this seller, and they all arrived in good conditions.

Fourth, if you really want to buy a 'dente" flytrap, not a typical flytrap, you must do some research to know how to differentiate the two. Sometimes, the seller may sold you the 'typical', not the 'dente'.

Note: the fly traps are planted in a type of moss that looks like dead plant matter, but it is just to keep the plants moist. I made the mistake of trying to pull it all out before I realized what it was, then I had to stuff it all back in the pot which was a nuisance.
It's been about 3 weeks since I received my plant and it is doing quite well. I keep it moist with distilled water and it's happily living in a sunny window. It's grown 3 new heads already!

The only reason I'm rating this a 4 out of 5 is that my plant is not a Dente Venus Fly trap, it's just a regular one. Although I'm still happy with it, it's not what I ordered. I noticed that another reviewer also received a regular fly trap as well.

The plants died within a week of being delivered. (And YES I did follow the instructions for their care). Save yourself a lot of time and money by just purchasing these plants at Home Depot as they will actually live, cost half as much, and NO shipping charge!

1.0 out of 5 stars Need to work on shipping methods., January 18, 2009
This review is from: Dente Venus Fly Trap Plant - Dionaea - Carnivorous - Potted
Ordered $50 worth of carnivorous plants for my son for Christmas. All came falling out of their pots in a Priority box, NOT even marked "this end up". All plants were dead within 2 weeks including this one. Hirt's should have a better method for shipping. No help available through customer support, just out $50! The Venus Fly Trap had its traps closed on itself upon arrival. It was "eating" itself due to the abuse of shipping.

5.0 out of 5 stars hungry little guys eat fruit gnats, September 2, 2010

These 2 little guys looked weak when I unwrapped them, but they immediately opened up all their pods and chowed down on those aggravating tiny fruit gnats that come home from the farmers' markets in summer. Gnats were all over my kitchen, drowning themselves in the chardonnay. They flocked to the flytraps, and now they're gone. You can see their shadows inside the pods if you hold the plant up to the light.

The plants tripled in size in a few weeks, and I bring home fresh corn and organic orchard peaches with impunity. No gnat lasts more than a few hours. So, I'm recommending them for canning season, for organic gardeners especially. No toxic residue, and they are good company.

I read the other reviews. Those problem must have all been addressed. These pods are dentate, not smooth, so this must be dente variety. One of mine did have a blackened pod, but that resolved quickly, and more pods open all the time. They were small, the stems and little leaves are green, and they had good turgor. The packing was utterly secure: extreme reinforcement of a close cap, which at first worried me. They looked a little squashed, but perked up when the gnats were so enthusiastic about providing nutrients. Five stars from my household.

3.0 out of 5 stars Lil' Chomps, June 8, 2010

Our flytrap came very quickly and in rather good condition with quite a few open "mouths"but a couple were kind of black. It proceeded to eat 3-4 flys/gnats within a week or 2 and we really enjoyed it. A lot more of the leaves were starting to blacken. We were trying some suggested fixes for this but will never know how it would have turned out because our dog decided to knock it over and eat the moss out of it. RIP Lil' Chomps - we loved him while we had him.

I recieved my fly trap in the mail earlier than expected which was nice but after opening it, what I found was unsatisfactory. The fly trap was already turning black and was upsidedown in the little pot it came in with a solo lid on it. It looked nothing like what the sellers picture looked like and after one week I knew it was not going to make it unless a miracle happened. I tried what all the books said to try to revive it but it was too late. It was all black a week later. I emailed the seller for a new one but he would only refund my money. A sad day in the plant world.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome plant!, January 13, 2009

If you have never had a carnivorous plant, then get one of these babies! They're attractive, produce a faint sweet smell, and eat bugs!

BEWARE!! If you plant them outside (as my mother did) you might wanna watch out for squirrels. I dunno why a squirrel attacked ours, but it did. Poor plant died. Haha.

Note: once they capture a bug they'll close until it has been digested which usually takes between 24 and 72 hours.
