AWFUL!!!,

This review is from: Just Going to the Dentist (Little Critter) (Golden Look-Look Books) (Paperback)
I work in a Pediatric Dental practice. I ordered this book for my son and for his class, my niece and nephews. I threw them all away b/c they show the needle, which NEVER happens and is one way to get your child to be afraid of going to the dentist. In the end, Little Critter gets a lollipop for being so good, and granted the jar in the background says "Sugar Free", preschool aged kids cannot read. I was very disappointed b/c I love Little Critter, but not a good idea to get your child excited about going to the dentist.

excellent preparation for the first trip to the dentist,

Mayer has done it again! Delightful pictures and simple text prepare any child for their first dentist trip. My two year old insisted on hearing the story dozens of times before her first appointment and was prepared once we arrived at the office. The only problem we had was that our dentist is not a rabbit!

Not such a great book,

I found this book to be a little too much for my 4 year old. I did not like the fact that the book says 'it will not hurt' and shows a picture of a needle for novacaine shot. I realize the shots are probably inevitable, but telling a child it will not hurt is unrealistic. I should have read the content before I purchased the book.

not for preschoolers,
This review is from: Just Going to the Dentist (Little Critter) (Golden Look-Look Books) (Paperback)
Got this for my 3 year old's first dentist visit. Horrendous book. A 3 year old doesn't need to know about cavities and shots. too scary!! Plus the illustrations are not nice to look at. I would not recommend this book to anybody.

For some reason it hard to find a children's book that shows denistry in a positive, non-hurtful way. This book comes close, but Little Critter ends up with a cavity on his very first visit and the dentist pulls out a huge needle. Although the book presents dentistry, for the most part, in a positive, non-scary light for the young child, the needle and the cavity were not needed.

Just returned from bookstore with plans to purchase book to help with child's upcoming dental visit. He is already nervous about it. Although this may be a nice book in it's own right, it is NOT a book that seems to comfort a child's fears of the dentist. There are needles and overall dark and busy illustrations that seem overwhelming to a youngster. i felt like i was reading Where the Wild Things Are, rather than a book i was hoping would placate my child's concerns. Even the critters little frog friend gets scared in the book. it might be a realistic book, but i'll have to find another way to prepare my child for his dental visit.

Needle illustration terrified my child,

We were all ready to go to the dentist, and I got my son there with difficulty, which was strange, since he had gone easily before.
When he sat in the dentist's chair, he refused to even open his mouth. When I asked why, he said, "I don't want a needle in my mouth like the book!" Even after I reassured him, he wouldn't do it. Great. The book is supposed to help explain the process and make kids more comfortable, yet without it we were much better off. I'm dumping it!

I got this to read to my 5-year old before his first dentist visit. We read it dozens of times; he asked for it over and over again. By the time his first appointment arrived, he was ready. He was not the least bit afraid. He has been to the dentist three times now, and he treats it as something routine and does not make a big deal out of it. In the dentist's office, I saw other children screaming and crying as they were led back to the examination room from the waiting room. Fear of the unknown is the worst fear. Knowing what to expect makes things a lot easier. I recommend this book.

ISBN 0307125831 - Little kids are easily frightened by new things, and the dentist is high on the list. The idea that a book could help a child overcome that certainly doesn't make any sense to me - but it works anyway!
The first trip to the dentist with Mom is a little scary, but there's toys and books to pass the waiting time. Everything is easy and painless, even getting a shot and a filling! The illustrations are filled with great detail, as always in Mayer's books. The frog in every picture is a little Where's-Waldo-ish, which will amuse the shortest attention spans. - AnnaLovesBooks

This is a very cute book that is great for little kids getting ready to go to the dentist for the first time. Some of the terms used are a little out of date but, this is an overall great book for little ones.
