This latest Live CD performance (from Rio 2007) is spectacular and one of her best! I saw the initial preview presentation of this show in Rio in Dec 2006. Maria Bethania (sister of Caetano Veloso) at 62 is a brasilian treasure and one of the greatest singers in the world (she seldoms performs outside of South America) and seeing her in person is an experience not to missed. She has the wisdom of the ages, the passion and heart of the earth mother goddess, and the exhuberance of youth!! Her recording of the show leaves only the visual missing. Her presentation is full of emotions, she understands and feels the words she sings, and she delivers every single word in a performance few performer can match - she literally is in the ranks of Sinatra, Fitzgerald, Streisand... Unfortunately she sings in Portuguese, but even if you do not know a single word, the emotions, the tenderness, the joy, the happiness and sorrow can be felt just by her interpretations. I have all of her recordings (c. 70 cds) and while my portuguese is almost nil, I love hearing her singing and never get tired of it. I think her live recordings are her best as she sings to each and every person in the audience and it is a very personal interaction. If you are familiar with Bethania, you understand my enthusiam. If you are not, do yourself a favor and buy the cd, and begin to explore this amazing woman.
