Book Description

March 30, 2007
This book takes readers from the days when gold dust was legal tender in the dusty frontier town of Denver to the present when the Mint is a world-class facility that makes most of our coins. History buffs will love the book's historical highlights while casual readers will enjoy seeing how the cultural events and trends influenced money and life at the Mint. The book provides a unique, behind-the-scenes look at the Mint-entertaining stories of colorful characters, controversial coins, and the creative artists behind the nation's coinage. It covers everything from workday life at the Mint to tales of gangsters and dramatic gold transfers. It goes beyond the basics, with well-researched slices of information, photos and interviews. Even money-oriented recipes are included (mint brownies, anyone?).

5.0 out of 5 stars Great stories about where we get our money, August 6, 2007
This review is from: The Denver Mint: 100 Years of Gangsters, Gold, and Ghosts (Paperback)
A very entertaining book. Not a boring list of facts and dates and metalurgical formulas, but a collection of interesting stories surrounding the money factory of downtown Denver. Like the title says, from gangsters-a frozen corpse in the getaway car, to ghosts on the dreaded third floor, to the gold provide a great bunch of anecdotes. I especially enjoyed the interview with the sculptor of the Sacajawea dollar coin. Certainly a must for any Denverite, and a good read for anyone who cares about money!

5.0 out of 5 stars A fun, insightful read!, May 8, 2007
This review is from: The Denver Mint: 100 Years of Gangsters, Gold, and Ghosts (Paperback)
This is a fun, insightful read. I enjoy my history with a dose of humor, and this book provided just that. It made me feel connected to the coins I use daily and have taken for granted and gave me an insiders view of the happenings at the Mint.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Read!, April 14, 2007
This review is from: The Denver Mint: 100 Years of Gangsters, Gold, and Ghosts (Paperback)
I thought this was an informative and fun read. The authors did a great job of presenting the subject in a fresh and entertaining manner. While I suspect that the information on the coins is fairly basic from a serious numismatist's point of view, as a casual collector, I found it very useful. The book is loaded with colorful historical information on The Denver Mint.
