First thing's first: take those little yellow dots of paper off the bottom of the figures!! They won't skate smoothly (or at all) with those pieces of paper in place.

Now that's been said: Although I've always known Department 56 had a huge fan following, I never got into collecting the pieces myself. This item was purchased as a Christmas present for my boyfriend's parents. Every Christmas they set up a Christmas village under their tree, but they don't have a piece like this! My boyfriend plays hockey so it seemed like a nice way to add to their tradition in a personal way.

The detail on the piece is astounding! Tiny mesh on the goal! The puck looks like it's flying off the stick! The skaters actually have defined faces that are well painted on... no stray smudges in any of the paint job. Some assembly IS required, if you consider sticking tiny artificial trees into pre-drilled holes assembly.

The mechanism is a lot quieter than expected and would not be discernible from a distance. The skaters move very smoothly and realistically react to each other. The parents are going to love this one!

Only negative, the battery compartment is permanently attached to the unit. There is a spot to plug in an ac adapter, but really what's the point when you've got that battery compartment dangling off forever?

This was the only hockey animation that I could find when I searched for a replacement for our older model. Although they look almost identical, this Dept. 56 version is smaller and entirely plastic (except for the hockey players.) An AC adapter must be purchased separately. It's cute enough--I just think it's rather pricey.

Glad we purchased this item. Adds to our Christmas holiday decorations. Easy to set up and take down. Works well.

this item came promptly but with no AC adapter and a battery compartment that seemed to work on an off, only when wires were jiggled. Very disappointing. Feel ripped off.

Perfect xmas gift for a hockey player, or hockey player at heart. Very nice.
