2.0 out of 5 stars big DM fan. But what happen to dave's voice??
i saw them live in l.a. at the exciter tour, and they sounded excellent. the dave that sang in paris in this video stinks. the only highlight is when martin gore sings and on the 2nd cd. martin gore does an accoustic version of sister of night. i honestly would recommend you getting the DM Devotional DVD. dave and the gang all sing great there..

This is an amazing representation of the powerful 2001 Exciter tour and is easily recommended. The DVD also features an amazing second disc loaded with special features including "Sister of the Night" performed live in Stockholm one of the few places it was performed

This is one of the few concert videos that I can watch over and over. At first I felt like something is missing but it really grew on me. There are some great songs on here.

3.0 out of 5 stars Um, I was surprised., March 4, 2005

I've been a DM fan since my high school days in the late 80's. However, I've never seen them live. All though the past 15 years or so, they've remained the top band I listen to consistently.

If this show is any indication of their live performances... I'm glad I haven't wasted the money to see them live. Was it just me or was Dave replaced with some guy who thought it would be a good idea to sing the songs like he's in a night club in Vegas? Vocals that are strained, flat and sometimes downright off key, not to mention really... just awful in some senses.

The vocals would be flat as hell... then he'd take off whirling like a dervish around stage. How about putting some of that energy into actually singing? Oh well.

Martin did look downright pained at times, but sounded as beautiful as I expected. And as another reviewer mentioned, there seemed to be no connection, not between Dave and Martin, Dave and the other band members on stage, or with the audience.

The quality of the DVD overall is good, no complaints with that.

But I think I'll go back to my CD's and hope this was all just a bad dream.

3.0 out of 5 stars Fair but some what strained, January 15, 2005
This review is from: Depeche Mode: One Night in Paris - The Exciter Tour 2001 (DVD)
Sound: This particular performance lacks the DM energy that I have come to love. David Gahan sounds as if he is straining to achieve the notes that once came with ease. This is especially true when DM's older material. I know this can be attributed to his age but it's just depressing because this may be considered DM's last stay. Visuals: Anton Corbijn's camera work once again appeases the senses. The DM backdrop provides sharp images and Corbijn's camera work capures them in their top form. But, it is all too apparent that DM lacks the physical energy of yesteryear. They are getting on in their years so once again age has taken a step or two away from David Gahan's ability to perform up to par. Notes: In short, I would recommend any one of their other live performances on DVD over this one. I found that 'Devotional', which came out just after 'One Night in Paris', to be considered redeming in nature. The 'Devotional' performance is dated (Faith & Devotion Tour 1993) and the picture suffers as a result but, both DM's sound and stage presence are electric.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dave Gahan Does not get Better than this!! Fantastic!!!, October 5, 2002

This DVD Takes you back, then brings you into the future. Dave Gahan has never looked this good or sounded so strong. Martin Gore, is groovin' with Dave, but more importantly out in front, one with the audiance, something that is rare to see. Martin sings "HOME," and it is so smooth. The lighting, stage and guest artists make this a must have for all Depeche Mode fans. I got such a thrill out of seeing Dave so vivacious! So alive. DM has changed and evolved. To see Dave with so much energy and charm, it is breath taking. The mass of thousands of fans, all moving and singing with the band. I have been a fan for 22 years, and you can see how Dave "Shines" for Martin and how Martin loves every single minute of it. The collection of songs are a perfect mix. If you are a fan in the least bit, add this to your collection. It is simply the best concert performance I have ever seen. The performance for this two night concert in Paris, is spectacular. You will not regret the purchase. We should all be thankful that Dave is healthy and healing. The depths Dave went to, to find himself, were not in Vain! If you have not followed then in a while, but are an old fan, this will rejuvinate you. It is refreshing and new, although some of the material is older. There is a renewed spirit, and Anton Corbijn really pulled this one off. It is a DVD, you will crave to listen to and watch, again and again! It is quite addicting. ***** Excellent!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Dave is a hot sweaty damn good performer, and I'm straight, August 13, 2005
This review is from: Depeche Mode: One Night in Paris - The Exciter Tour 2001 (DVD)
FIVE STARS...SIX IS MORE LIKE IT. I am a picky bastard, and my bride is even more brutal. That said, we do not own a better DVD than "One Night in Paris". Every time we put it in the DVD player, I get lucky. Forget all the "Dave sings flat" blah blah blah that some claim. That's cockamayme blowhardiness from people who want to hear "New Life" over and over on their Casio portable tape players. Dave gives the rarest of performances that gives Jim Morrison and Elvis a run for their money (and thankfully he isn't drugged out and rail thin like in Devotional). I saw them in Boston, and it was the best concert of the 40 concerts I have been to in my life. If you want something more than pop-fizz "People Are People" and "Master and Servant" this DVD sets the standard thanks to Dave's stage presence, Martin's song writing ability, and Andrew Corbin's direction. SIX STARS.

5.0 out of 5 stars Depeche Mode at their finest (thus far)..., February 24, 2008
By
This review is from: Depeche Mode: One Night in Paris - The Exciter Tour 2001 (DVD)
To the uninitiated this concert video will probably take you by surprise and open a world to you that you might not of thought ever existed. This concert from the first moment to the very last is entirely enthralling.

To the Depeche Mode fan that may have seen all the other concerts that they've put out and the videos and the bootleg documentaries ... this concert will probably stick out and be recognized as their best without any argument.

The songs on this go back to the very beginning of their career and lead all the way up to 2001. The surprising thing to realize is how far ahead of a lot of other bands that were made famous by the sound created and harnessed by Depeche Mode, long after DM had already graduated and moved away from it. This fact is actually quite chilling as their sound is sometimes years ahead of everyone else.

My favourites on this are:

Dream On
When The Body Speaks
In your Room

If you happen to watch this on a big screen HDTV with surround sound, this will floor you and everybody in the vicinity as both the picture and sound are masterful. What's more surreal is the large HDTV behind the band that sometimes displays black and white film, a fish tank, water drops ... you name it.

This is a must own concert DVD for anyone who listens to music at home.

2.0 out of 5 stars Great tracklisting...presentation is somewhat disappointing, January 20, 2005
This review is from: Depeche Mode: One Night in Paris - The Exciter Tour 2001 (DVD)

This DVD had all the possibilities of being Depeche Mode's best one yet. To me, it had the best tracklisting (although a few more older songs would have been nice) of any of their previously released DVDs.

However, other than the packaging which is very nice (and almost identical to the 'Devotional' DVD packaging - just with different colors), this DVD is a disappointment to me. For one, it seems like 3 guys on stage (really just 2: Martin and Dave) doing there own thing - and it doesn't seem like there's any connection between them...ever. Also, the stage show is not nearly as impressive as previous DM shows.

All of these wrongs could have been righted however, if only the singing was up to par, but Dave just doesn't give his typical awesome vocal performance. He seems more interested in satisfying his ego of watching the fans adore him than he is in singing the songs. Some of them are just horrible, including 'Black Celebration' which really upsets me because that song is one of my favorite DM songs of all time.

It's a decent experience I guess, but with all that it could have been - it's very disappointing.

5.0 out of 5 stars this is what depeche mode is all about, May 29, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Depeche Mode: One Night in Paris - The Exciter Tour 2001 (DVD)
deep colors, deep emotions...these are the things that make up a depeche mode concert. and these elements come together incredibly on this dvd. the use of colors is amazing. the cinematography is fantastic. anton uses very innovative shots of the band. the colors used correspond with the feeling of the songs being performed very well. in a song like walking in my shoes, there is a lot of blue because the song projects a very 'blue mood.'

the performance is extremely energetic, yet it is also very intimate. songs like when the body speaks, waiting for the night, breathe, freelove, and it doesn't matter two come across with a lot of feeling...a lot of soul. and songs like enjoy the silence, i feel you, personal jesus, the sweetest condition, and the dead of night just give you a good kick in the butt and really wake you up. you just feel like dancing!

one major complaint i had was the sound. when i popped in the dvd and my system was set to dolby digital 5.1, the amount of echo coming from the rear speakers totally overwhelmed the sound from the front, thus creating a very unnatural presence. the drums were hardly there at all. and depeche mode tours with one of the best drummers i've seen in a long time. i then switched to stereo, and the sound was too perfect. the drums were crystal clear and so was dave's voice. but the audience was inaudible. it sounded like a studio recording. my ideal sound mix is all the music from the front channels, and audience sound from the rear mixed in with very slight echo of the music from the rear as well.
perhaps i will set my speakers to the 'large' setting and see what happens.

the bonus disc was cool. it was interesting to watch the first time. i don't think i'll watch it again for a very long time to come.

a big thank you to mute and univeral for putting out such a visually stunning dvd. and a gigantic thank you to depeche mode for putting on a mindblowing performance. great job guys!!!
