Editorial Reviews

For over a quarter of a century Depeche Mode has been making some of the most affecting and ground breaking music in existence. From the Synth-Pop innocence of their early eighties New Romanticism to the sombre 'no wave' landscapes of their more recent output, this incredible group has been hailed as godfathers to Techno, Electronica, and Industrial Metal. Having not only survived but also flourished, while virtually all of their contemporaries have disappeared, they now command a level of respect, from critics, consumers and musicians alike, that was unthinkable 'back in the day.' Depeche Mode: Random Access Memory is a celebration of their extraordinary acheivments and charts; the astonishing career of Esseex's finest. For the first time, this DVD documentary goes behind the music and discovers what it took for this unlikely group from Basildon to remain such visionary pioneers of the electronic scene for all those years. Using exclusive interviews, rare footage, previously unseen photographs and a host of other features this film reveals virtually everything anyone could ever want to know.

This DVD is a complete waste of time. There's nothing new and exciting about it. Not to be harsh or anything, but the people they talked to were the rejects from Depeche Mode's Behind The Music. Out of everyone they interviewed, it seems that only three of them actually met the band and two of those three probably haven't even spoke to the band in about twenty years. The big shocker is Gareth Jones. He's worked with the band in the past and I'm surprised he would be apart of this. The rest of the people interviewed were Jonathan Miller who wrote a book on Depeche Mode (and is, sadly, a "Depeche Mode historian") and members of a Depeche Mode tribute band. My question is, why are these guys being interviewd? They clearly have not met the band.

To sum up, this was just plain awful. There's no Depeche Mode music in it, and it is underscored by some hideous wanna-be DM/electronic music. I couldn't make it all the way through this, it was so boring I kept falling asleep. Avoid this DVD at all cost! My recommendation is to check online for someone who has a copy of DM's VH1: Behind The Music.

For some reason I expected more interviews, music and detailed bio that would deal more with group inner problems etc. Instead this DVD turns from lousy to horrible...interviews with people who were around the band during their ups and downs who sadly, can't tell us anything new, that we already did not know... The scariest moments are interviews with band member lookalikes...whoa...scary...Z production

Although there is no music from the band, it concentrates more on the life story of the band and how they became famous throughout the 80's and into the 90's and now their work today. It is packed with interviews, photos and footage, and includes people that have worked with them like the photographer and man behind their album artwork... It's definitely an interesting film and if you want to know more in depth about the band then I'd recommend it to all..... Good luck with the quiz at the end!!!
