5.0 out of 5 stars Dreamy, delicious world/indie-ambient/rock-folktronica album from Spain, November 12, 2009

Depedro
"DePedro"
(NatGeo Music, 2009)
----------------------------
A delectable, super-listenable record from Spanish indie scenester Jairo Zavala, from the band Nat Geo. This set mixes traditional Spanish and modern pop influences, with a bit of contemporary freak-folk and mellow-tronic ambient spaciness... If the blend sounds subtly familiar, perhaps you won't be surprised to hear that Craig Schumacher for Calexico is one of Zavala's collaborators on this album, helping sculpt a gentle, evocative sound that will utterly draw you in. This was one of the big happy-surprise records for me this spring, a disc that stayed glued inside my CD player for weeks on end, with several songs that slipped into my dreams at night. Definitely worth checking out. (DJ Joe Sixpack, Slipcue Guide To World Music)

4.0 out of 5 stars Satiate Your Calexico Appetite!, January 17, 2009

This review is from: Depedro (Audio CD)
if, like myself, you can't get enough of Calexico & their desert twang & atmosphere...this Depedro cd is a genuine treat. Depedro is guitarist/vocalist Jairo Zavala from Madrid & he is backed here by the entire Calexico band. sure Burns & Covertino have their hand in a ton of side projects these days, Calexico's reach is evident everywhere. the Depedro cd is the closest thing however, to the rich, elegant sound of Calexico. apart from one sort of typical "latin rock" track this cd has nearly all the feeling of a Calexico release. that's not to say it doesn't have its own merits. Zavala's voice is a welcome addition to that sound. the track Equivocado is as cool as any cut on any cd. as well as appearing on Carried To Dust, Zavala toured as a member of Calexico on that tour & was integral to their show. hopefully this collaboration will continue but i will follow Depedro's next move even if he choses to front his own band & develop more of his own identity. the talent is surely there.

This CD isn't available in Israel.
If you add the delivery cost it's price is about 70New Shekels.
I ordered the CD by standard mail, and it arrived to my house in 9 days.
With the CD you get also a booklet with the songs lirics.
Hope you enjoy Depedro as much as I do.

4.0 out of 5 stars Different feel from his live music, August 22, 2010
By
This review is from: Depedro (Audio CD)
I saw DePedro when he opened for Federico Aubele in Minneapolis, which is where I picked up this CD. When he performed, it was entirely solo with just a guitar and very compelling, very sexy. The CD was a bit of a surprise after the performance. I expected a little more of the acoustic, raw feeling to come through and felt the music to be overproduced compared to his live performance. However, the CD itself was good to listen to and grew on me over time. I find the DePedro songs fit well in my play lists with Federico Aubele, Thievery Corporation and others. Track #5, Llorona is probably my favorite and most evokes the feel of his live performance.

I heard a track from this album playing while in a coffee shop where they had on a compilation album featuring numerous different musical groups. The track from this debut album was the only one that really caught my attention which prompted me to inquire with the employees behind the counter as to who exactly was this band. Similar to Calexico i was not surprised to learn that Depedro was in fact a solo effort by one of its members.I would recommend it for the way that its melodies tend to linger with the listener.I was able to find a great bargain on a used copy while shopping on Amazon.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, music - deserves to be a (northern) summer hit, May 16, 2010

We first saw Depedro playing before Calexico in Sydney Australia earlier this year. It was heart stopping music - passionate, beautiful and music that stuck in your mind for weeks afterwards. The songs are mainly sung in Spanish, with Calexico's stunning playing a feature. They are different and original and a in a word 'great'. One of those rare CDs with not a single dud song.

This record is a studio version of this experience. It has been on very high rotation at our house since we have bought it. It is just lovely - the singing, the musicianship, the sheer excellence of the music. It is specially suited to playing at night in the summer. It makes one's spirits soar.

The CD features mainly the self penned songs of Jairo Zavala, a well known (in Spain), long time Spanish musician, with assistance from Joey Burns and others of Calexico - in particular, Paul Niehaus on pedal steel guitar and Martin Wenk on trumpet - who have provided some achingly beautiful settings for the songs. Needless to say, Jairo can sing - he has a husky timbre to his voice which adds something fabulous to the songs.

Well done Jairo - you have created a masterpiece which deserves much wider acclaim.

BUY THIS, you won't regret it.
