More About the Author

My Story (A Biographical Sketch): "Yao" Lloyd D. McCarthy

"Finally, in 2007 while not rising to the level of President Jefferson's intellectual heights or passion for political change , and attaining only the "widow's might" of Poe's craft and artistry, I decided to tell the tale of McKay and Manley, poet and politician..."

I was born in the small Central American town of Mandeville, Jamaica, to a working class family and have had the good fortune of attending one of the Americas top universities, the University of Virginia (UVA), in Charlottesville, VA., an institution with connections to some world renowned figures. Of these, the two that I find most interesting are: Its founder, one of the important American Revolutionary leaders and intellectual, Thomas Jefferson; and Edgar Allan Poe, one of the greatest American writers.

My pursuit of a public policy and urban planning profession along with an interest in the life and times of well known Afro-Caribbean leaders such as Michael Manley, led me to Jefferson. Likewise, it was my interest in the art and life of Harlem Literary Renaissance writer, Claude McKay that led me to Poe.

Now, to what unity has this complex mixture of interests brought me?

I would say to interdisciplinary research and professional practice. An approach which has enabled me to critically examine the wider issues of economic and human development problems scientifically, in their relations to production and the wellbeing of society.

Among my works are the following:
* For approximately ten (10) years, I have helped the major, if not all, of the mobile telecommunications service providers in the USA to expand and upgrade their telecommunications technology and infrastructure in the US Atlantic region by: a) consulting on the land use, environmental, design and siting of their networks, b) As a consultant, managed the process to secure timely land use and construction permissions from municipalities and compliance with state and federal regulations.

* As a Director of Land Policy in the Office of the Prime Minister, Jamaica (2 years), I helped the Government to complete its work--conducted by several committees and consultants--on a national land policy for Jamaica which has resulted in the reform of all of the country's state and local government agencies as well as regulations having anything to do with land, its management and development. My role included:

a) managing the day to day operation of the land policy unit

b) coordinating the work and output of the committees working on policy reform issues for land management technologies, land titling and tenure systems change, acquisition and divestment of government owned lands, taxation and incentives for land development, policies for various industrial sectors such as agriculture, tourism and mining and, of course institutional reform; and

c) Organized and facilitated town meetings and conferences.

* Served as a Program Director for Land Administration, in which capacity my role was to help to facilitate the implementation of the above-mentioned land policy and institutional reforms for Jamaica.

Finally, in 2007 while not rising to the level of President Jefferson's intellectual heights or passion for political change , and attaining only the "widow's might" of Poe's craft and artistry, I decided to tell the tale of McKay and Manley, poet and politician using international relations and international development theories to examine and explain the meaning of their lives and works in my little book entitled , "In-Dependence from Bondage".

So, what are my current interests? Well:
*
a) To help states and local governments in the U.S.A, the Caribbean and Africa to develop and implement sound policies, regulations and permissions review systems for the siting and deployment of mobile telecommunications technology infrastructure. And,

b) To provide public policy, land use planning and Site Acquisition consulting services to companies deploying green energy technology and Wireless Communications Infrastructure. I hope to assist them with their regulatory compliance and municipal permissions for deployments. And, to help them negotiate and acquire the most suitable land for the installation of their infrastructure.

5.0 out of 5 stars Globalization: Friend or Foe?, December 12, 2006
This review is from: In-Dependence from Bondage (Paperback)
I recently read somewhere that 2% of the worlds richest population owns over half of the world's wealth. An article on ABC news stated that ""Wealth is heavily concentrated in North America, Europe and high-income Asia-Pacific countries. People in these countries collectively hold almost 90 percent of total world wealth." Yet, globalization is one the rise and is further touted as a means to economic empowerment. "In-Dependence from Bondage" looks at the unconstructive consequences that globalization brings to many in the African Diaspora and the world. This book illustrates how two Jamaican political figures prophetically viewed globalization's impact on developing nations during the 20th century and provides statistical analysis of how this global economic disparity has manifested itself in the quality of life of the peoples of developing nations. Mr. McCarthy defines globalization as the spread of American capitalism and provides extensive evidence as to how the throngs of capitalism (and its undercurrent of Elitism) affect impoverished nations for the benefit of a select few. Where there is a thesis, there must be an antithesis. This book represents a viable alternative view from which we all can learn. BRAVO!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Globalization and the African Diaspora Community, December 2, 2006
This review is from: In-Dependence from Bondage (Paperback)
I found this book to be extremely engaging, WELL-RESEARCHED, creative and generally thought provoking. The author has taken a very original approach by comparing the written works of a Afro-Caribbean poet (who was instrumental in igniting the Harlem Renaissance) with those of Jamaica's most loved Prime Minister Michael Manley. He has compared their writings to extrapolate on their political views on globalization and its impact on peoples of the African Diaspora and the global South. The interspersing of poetic writings with declassified political documents is indeed avant-garde!! It makes the work into one that can be enjoyed by all.

I recommend it highly!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Book!, June 18, 2008
This review is from: In-Dependence from Bondage (Paperback)
I don't even know where to begin as it relates to this book. One word would be excellent thought. It provides a clear, concise, well researched, informative (not bias or persuasive) view on Micheal Manley and Claude McKay's ideologies. I think all 'yardies' should read this book. It all honesty it has instilled a foundation for a deep sense of national pride that I didn't really have before. The book also gives an interesting blue print of Third World development and how these great products of our nation (Jamaica) got to the views that they did. It also provides some insight on what the developing world is afraid of- third world cooperation. The short of it, is that I loved the book. I could not put it down once I started reading it.
