4.0 out of 5 stars Nice looking but poor cable management, January 21, 2009

This review is from: BDI Deploy Max 9649, Triple Wide Open TV Stand - Gloss Black (Electronics)
I purchased this product as a low stereo component stand for under a flat screen TV. I have a center channel on the top shelf and 6 components on the lower shelves.

Build quality: very good. There were no missing parts and fit and finish was very good.

Shipping: as expected. Delivered to my door by Crutchfield shippers. No problems here.

Look: very good. Installed the television stand looks clean and modern.

Wheels: important! It is really useful to be able to roll the unit out to work on cabling, then roll it back into place.

Cable management: poor. The BDI unit has a back panel with holes in it to route cables and they provide a method to attach cable ties to the back panel. The issue is that the holes in the back panel were too small and it would have been difficult if not impossible to make changes after it was all done. Think of trying to manage all cables to a receiver or surround-sound processor through a 12"x3" hole in the back panel. Fortunately the BDI unit works well without the back panel but at that point it's a 3-shelf stand with no cable management.

Power management: none. Why can't stereo / television stands provide a better way to do power distribution? I ended up attaching a 3' power distribution strip to the bottom shelf.

Capacity: less that expected. One feature of the BDI Deploy Max 9649 is that the glass shelves sweep back. The front is about 63" wide and the rear is about 48" wide. The significantly improves looks BUT you need to be aware that it's not possible to load up the front with components because they will stick out where the side sweeps back. Rather than 3 full size components on each shelf, the unit can handle 1-2 deep components with a 1-2 shallow components on the side. This constrains placement of components but in my case was workable.

Overall I'm very happy with the BDI 9649 Deploy Max although I did have to be very careful about arranging components and had to provide my own cable and power management.

I've had this stand for about a year now, and really love it.

Construction: top-notch. This stand feels very solid and durable. The wheels are an absolute necessity in order to move the unit and all the components it holds for changing connections and cleaning.

Assembly: very easy with very clear instructions. I had this unit together in under 30 minutes.

Style: We absolutely love it. The black tones match our 65 inch flat screen and related componentry and the color helps hide the wiring in the back. The look is clean, sleek, and modern.

A side benefit of the completely open design is that all components get maximum ventilation to minimize temperatures and prolong file. Additionally, there are no glass or wood doors to get in the way of signals from the remote control to the component.

We wouldn't trade this stand for anything...it fits our needs perfectly.
