Book Description

October 8, 2002
IS-IS or Intermediate System to Intermediate System protocol is a routing protocol which has long been used by telephone networks and has recently surged in popularity among Internet Service Providers and in other large networks. The IS-IS protocol is used in conjunction with the Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) and offers flexibility in configuration and scalability for large and complex networks. IS-IS is covered in the CCIE (Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert) exam, and those preparing for that challenging exam will be interested in learning more about this protocol. Two Cisco experts here provide a beneficial mix of operational theory of the protocol and many practical examples and case studies. This new guide provides what network professionals need most: highly valuable configuration examples, combined with expert advice on deploying IS-IS in a real network.

Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

IS-IS, the Intermediate System to Intermediate System protocol, has been used effectively as a routing protocol for many large-scale networks, including service provider backbone, telephone system management, and power equipment networks. Used in conjunction with the Border Gateway Protocol (BGP), IS-IS offers Internet Service Providers and the administrators of other large networks advanced flexibility and scalability. As a result, the number of complex networks employing the IS-IS protocol has grown tremendously.

IS-IS: Deployment in IP Networks is a hands-on guide for network engineers deploying, maintaining, and building IS-IS networks. Based on both the best practices of current implementations and the specifications of the protocol, IS-IS provides highly valuable configuration examples using Cisco IOS Software combined with real-life, expert descriptions, analysis, and advice. Readers will also find case studies and operational theory about this powerful and popular routing protocol.

Coverage includes:

  • A historical perspective on OSI protocols and addressing
  • Neighbor discovery, relationships, and pseudonodes
  • Flooding mechanisms, timers, and tuner timing
  • The division of the routing domain
  • Hierarchical network design and IS-IS deployment
  • The interaction between IS-IS and MPLS
  • Protocol enhancements, including dynamic host names, back door links, interaction with RPR, non-stop forwarding, and multitopology routing
  • Examining the IS-IS protocol from its origins to the most recent innovations, this book covers all of the protocol's pieces, packets, deployment strategies, and issues. It is a valuable resource for networking students preparing for the CCIE® (Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert) exam.

2.0 out of 5 stars Better off choosing an alternative selection, November 24, 2004

This review is from: IS-IS: Deployment in IP Networks (Hardcover)
As IS-IS is one of the more esoteric protocols, understood only by a few people in large scale ISP environments, I thought this book would be a welcome addition to my library as there isn't much else on the market covering this protocol. There are of course ISO 10589 and RFC 1195 which covers these protocols, but seeing as this is a short book I thought it might be able to shed some light on an otherwise complex protocol.

In reviewing this book I've come up disappointed in general. There are certainly a few golden nuggets and I give the book a couple of stars just for attempting to bridge the gap between the purely theoretical and the purely vendor specific. However, the book comes up short on most other points. Often times I found myself wanting to scrap this book in favor of some of the other selections on the market, but since I have respect for these authors I read the whole book hoping that they might be able to redeem themselves by the time I finished.

Obviously the authors have a great deal of knowledge about the subject, and I don't fault them entirely. The quality of the editing is poor with many grammatical and syntactical errors littered throughout the text. There are abundant instances throughout the book where the diagrams used do not match the text describing them. I was rather disappointed because I usually find that Addison-Wesley publishes some of the best texts on the market.

All in all, I thought this book could have been a lot better than it was. After all, these authors have several other titles under their belt, most notably "Advanced IP Network Design". But in this case, I would say that you are better off looking for other similar titles available on the market, such as Jeff Doyle's "Routing TCP/IP Volume 1".

Concepts in IS-IS including algorithmic details like Djikstra etc. are very well explained here. This book was exactly what I was looking for in trying to understand IS-IS.
