I've only heard a handful of progressive rock albums from South America. But this is, without a doubt, the best one. This album - their only one I think - was made in 1982. But the music sounds much more like the mid-seventies, inspired by bands like Genesis and Renaissance. Good female vocalist and a lead guitarist that could give Yngwie Malmsteen some fair competition.

Bacamarte recorded the material for Depois do Fim in 1977 and thus were a few years behind the "founding fathers" of the symphonic prog; it would be silly do deny the strong influences of Genesis, Camel and perhaps Jethro Tull.

However, I'd venture to say, the barely known Bacamarte did showcase the beauty, the wit and the power of the virtuoso symphonic prog in more spectacular fashion than Genesis or Camel could even have.

I am not necessarily the easiest listener to please, but I am simply not seeing anything on this album that would deserve criticism or a "penalty point" ... it's just perfectly made in every respect.

I would list this chef d'oeuvre on the same top progressive shelf with Sgt. Pepper, Red, Fear of a Blank Planet, Close to the Edge, Fragile, Dark Side of the Moon and perhaps a handful more.

It's such a loss for the prog community that Bacamarte haven't made more albums of the same caliber (there is another one from the '90's, but I understand it's nothing special).

"Depois Do Fim"
(Som-Arte, 1983)
--------------------------------
This is a classic Brazilian prog album, originally released on the independent Som-Arte label. Mainly it's a showcase for guitarist Mario Neto, who wrote almost all the songs on here; also featured is vocalist Jane Duboc, who is better known for her career as a jazz and bossa nova ballad singer. Many consider this to be a top-tier prog record: if you like the style, you'll want to check this out. You might also want to try some of Duboc's solo work -- it's a different style, but also great stuff. (DJ Joe Sixpack, Slipcue Guide To Brazilian Music)

I was looking for Bacamarte for quite a long time, especially for a good offer, because it's hard to find. The Amazon listing kept may attention, so I ordered instantly. Listening impressions: the music is special, being more symphonic-oriented, although progressive. The interpretation and the technical abilities of the performers are of a very high quality. But I was very impressed about the sonic presentation - make no mistake, this is a Brazil-based pressing, but the sonics are by far superior to many 'serious' productions. This is one of the best-listening CDs of my collection. Excellent work.
