Simone will tell you that I always went too far. And I still wonder if it wasn't Dad's "Aim High!" that planted that wild seed in me. Little Salmon is what he used to call me. He said I was the fish that broke water, flip-flopped up into the air and fought my way upstream, to where the action was. No matter what.
It all started one silly summer morning when I was about three feet tall and looking for action in the alley behind our house. Dickie Halloway burst out of the bushes, stuck his BB gun in my face and yelled,"Bang!" I slugged him for upstaging me like that, but in minutes we were pals again, that was the day I named us Gang Bang. It was also the day we went off on our first lark. While Mrs. McPhail was out in her garage for few minutes, we slipped into her house and streaked off with a pair of her Tahitian panties and bra. Then the next evening, while the Ridgeways were out, we squeezed in through one of their basement windows and stashed our treasures in Mr. Ridgeway's laundry bag. You should have heard Mrs. Ridgeway on Monday morning! Dickie and I did, even from under an elm tree a block away.
Simone thought that was a wierd thing to do, probably because she never had any real childhood herself. But I know she loved my little grabber, because the day she heard it she nicknamed me G.B., short for Gang Banger.
All my life, I wanted wild. You can have your garden-variety thrills like hang gliding or race cars or (Hugh Grant's) Divine pick-ups in Hollywood. The business world with its computer-controlled bucks and brains never seduced me either. Too tame.
