Holistic Health with Teeth, March 26, 2002
This review is from: Depression : Cured at Last! (Paperback)
As other reviewers have commented, Depression Cured at Last! is really an everything book which goes into the nuts and bolts of what was once background "health" in our minds--brings it to the foreground, where it has always belonged. Dr. Rogers is a leading spokesperson and researcher for the Environmental Medicine movement ... which is, in a word, holistic health with teeth.
The teeth are in the details, the resource source listings, and the references to scientific studies, published in peer-reviewed journals, which document the ways in which high-tech medicine can lead us to our exact nutritional deficits and toxic overload, and ways to overcome them.
Almost as soon as I finished reading through the Depression book, I began to look for ways to supply local public and university libraries with at least a sampling of Dr. Rogers' work. I was overjoyed when I found amazon.com with the bargain price ...
To give a couple of examples of Rogers at work, let us look at current educational material on osteoporosis and heart problems, with the admonitions to get more calcium, more exercise, fewer fats, etc. And nothing about the link between those ills. Dr. Rogers explains how and why calcium alone will not go to building bone, but instead will create hardening (calcification) of the arteries, unless we get it balanced appropriately with magnesium, copper, zinc. boron, manganese, etc. She does away with the feeble excuse that "the American diet has an adequate amount [of the trace minerals] with studies/statistics such as that "magnesium experts agree that 80% of Americans are deficient in magnesium." Magnesium, found in whole grains, greens, nuts and seeds, is a key element in some 33 bodily processes, and so it figures in the ills of many organ systems.
She does the same needed job on the Omega-3 and Omega-6 essential fatty acids. She explores the link between postpartum depression and the depletion of the Omega-3 element DHA by the needs of the developing fetal brain. People who get to read Dr. Rogers are not likely to ever again fall for the notion that post-partum depression is evidence of a Paxil or Prozac deficiency. We can avoid many tragedies like that of Mrs. Andrea Yates if we learn to ask of psychiatrists not, "Did he give the right anti-depressant for the right length of time?" but rather, "Did he thoroughly investigate essential fatty acid and mineral levels?"
I was led to my appreciation of Dr. Rogers' work by my own work in editing and publishing Lyme Disease 1991, a compilation of newsletter articles from doctors and patients. Some holistic books and a holistic physician, Dr. Serafina Corsello, of Long Island and NYC, get high praise from one of the patients who wrote about regaining her health. Another doctor, Joseph J. Burrascano, Jr., also of Long Island, who was already treating Lyme patients by the hundreds, is represented by a protocol which at that time included probiotics to be taken along with the antibiotics, Slo-Mag (magnesium), and fish oil (Omega 3) and evening primrose oil (Omega 6) capsules. Dr. Burrascano has become nationally known by now, not only for his successful treatments, but for his long struggle for the right to treat long-term Lyme symptoms with long-term medical treatment.
I hope that I have not left the impression that these are the only nutritional/chemical elements dealt with by Dr. Rogers. It would be impossible even to list the whole array. And, just as the nutrients/chemicals work together synergistically, so does Dr. Rogers' mind work to create an altered mind-set for the reader. I feel that I will never again read the instructions on pill-boxes or watch the T.V. commercials for medicines with the old interpretation. It's like being converted from a sheep to a stubborn goat. I think that if enough others can be so moved, we can vastly improve our health care system.
Sincerely,
Lora N. Mermin

Excellent Resource, January 25, 2006
This review is from: Depression : Cured at Last! (Paperback)
This is a very informative book. I felt led to write a positive review as one reader suggested that the other good reviews were written by people somehow affiliated with Sherry Rogers in some way. I am not. This book as helped two of my family members suffering from depression. If you're really seeking treatment and relief, buying her other books shouldn't be an issue, it should be helpful. All of her books are amazing and it's impossible to put all the findings into one book. She has intelligently broken them down.
