Book Description

June 1, 2004 0935652760 978-0935652765
Discover your own hero's journey and how to encourage others on their paths to self-understanding. In Depth Coaching, author Pat Adson explores the skills and attitudes needed to assist people in developing their full potential. As a detailed guide for therapists, life coaches and any one interested in helping others on the journey, this book provides the tools for an intense study of personal developmental issues. Based on the work of Carol Pearson, co-developer of the Pearson-Marr Archetype Indicator® instrument, Depth Coaching emphasizes the practice of positive psychology based on development rather than disease. Each section of the journey contains a workbook.

Initially resisting the call to become a life coach, author and psychologist Pat Adson discovered the rewarding benefits of helping others explore paths to meaning and balance. She notes, however, that this is a vocation undertaken only after one has fulfilled his or her own journey. Inspired by Carol Pearson's work with self-development through archetypes, Adson set out to explore her own "hero's journey." The result of her exploration is this step-by-step guide created for all who wish to take the journey or to coach others on their paths.

"Coaching as a discipline," Adson tells readers, "is a client-centered way of working with individuals to help them achieve their goals, balance their lives, and attain fulfillment. Coaching focuses on clients' lifelong development rather than the remediation of past wounds. The coach and client collaborate as partners or peers in a relationship that is symmetric rather than paternalistic.

Therapists, educators, and spiritual leaders will find Adson's methods useful in developing their own strengths as well as encouraging clients toward embarking on their personal journeys. Individuals and anyone who wishes to support themselves or others through growth and development will also find this work enlightening and helpful.

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Depth Coaching: Discovering Archetypes For Empowerment, Growth, And Balance (Paperback)
For those who did not study psychology and are not counselors, this book is a great and easy to understand guide in the concepts of archetypes. I found it clearly written, with useful exercises and explanations. A useful tool for life coaches working with clients or for individuals who want to undertake a journey of self-discovery.

5.0 out of 5 stars Intriguing concepts, December 14, 2008

This review is from: Depth Coaching: Discovering Archetypes For Empowerment, Growth, And Balance (Paperback)
The concept of archetypes has gained in popularity in the last few years with the publication of tests to analyze which ones have influence on you and where you are in your personal mythic journey. Whether they are innate or culturally influenced, the concept is intriguing, and this workbook does a good job in defining them and exploring them using an active model that can be replicated for others to use with clients. Understanding the concepts and having a language to explain the terminology gives voice to ideas that can be used to metaphorically teach clients in a coaching session. This workbook provides a nice balance of theory and practicality.

3.0 out of 5 stars Simplistic look at complex subject, October 10, 2008
This review is from: Depth Coaching: Discovering Archetypes For Empowerment, Growth, And Balance (Paperback)
This book is a very simplistic look at both archetypes and coaching. for people who find Joseph Campbell's "Hero with a thousand faces" a bit complex and academic this is a lovely introduction. It does not have the richness of Campbell's work though. from a coaching perspective the same can be said. Not all coaching clients can be that easily put through a journey and archetype recipe and not all of them would be enamored with this process. It is useful for some but coaching, especially in a business context is a lot more context that it gets credit for in this book.
