5.0 out of 5 stars Epic, heavy, brutal deathcore.
I'm not a huge fan of the deathcore genre. It all sounds the same to me. Not only does Ocean break the mold, but it beats the living crap out of it. The production that went in to this album really shines through. There's really not much to say about this album other than I can listen to it all the way through without the urge to change songs. If you're a fan of heavy,...

Here we go again, the whole deathcore genre has been played out. When I mean played out, I mean it's been used and sold until you couldn't get an ounce more out of it.

Oceano are prime examples of what are good musicians playing bland music. Unfortunately for the other reviewers zeal, the same can't be said for me. A lot of awkward placed breakdowns are...

4.0 out of 5 stars One reason to listen to Deathcore, May 21, 2009
This review is from: Depths (Bonus Dvd) (Audio CD)
Yes for all you deathcore haters, another deathcore band has come onto the
scene to lay waste to everything and everyone. The one exception to this is Chicargo's Oceano seem to have everything right.Lead by Adam Warren's brutal voice,Andrew Mikhail and Jeremy Carroll's shredding riffs,Daniel Terchin pounding double bass drumming, and finally Jason Jones droning bassline this band shows promise. The one thing that may turn people off would be how at some points Depths sounds a(n) awful like This Is Exile from Whitechapel.Don't let that turn you off from this metal gem by this talented young group's masterful debut.

5.0 out of 5 stars This Cd Will Make You Go Crazy In A Good Way!, June 10, 2009
This review is from: Depths (Bonus Dvd) (Audio CD)
Just from the first song on this cd, Inhuman Affliction I knew right from then this is my Whitechapel for 2009. I'm not saying Oceano sounds like Whitechapel, I am saying Oceano has the potential to be the Death Metal cd of the year. This band prepares me for destruction, and a must see live band in 2009. The cd will have you going out of your mind. This is a must have cd of 2009. If you don't have this cd you are missing out on the Death Metal cd of 2009.

5.0 out of 5 stars BRUTAL!!!!, April 13, 2009
This review is from: Depths (Bonus Dvd) (Audio CD)
Yes this is deathcore and if you don't like the genre than that's fine, but why buy something when you already know what direction it is. I mean the band's disclaimer for the last year is the "most pissed off deathcore band in the world"-so to think you're getting melodic death metal or something else would be foolish. With that being said I will agree w/some other internet reviews in that the sound is similiar to Whitechapel's "This is Exile"-which is a good thing since Whitechapel are an excellent band. Oceano have downtuned guitars and lots of smashmouth slam breaks. The vocals have the typical deathcore screams and lows-but this is deathcore and Oceano are not trying to be something they're not. It's brutal, has constant blastbeats, but it's not devoid of melody-there is some. They're are 2 instumentals on the cd and if you get the bonus edition from Earache-it has 2 extra songs, which make up for the instrumentals, plus a bonus dvd of the band. I love the use of bass drops on this cd, they are the loudest of the deathcore bunch, and every song has several. The bass drops will mow all posers down and have you begging for your life. Oceano don't really add anything new to the genre, however they do what they do extremelly well and have come up w/an excellent produced death metal cd. Will it be considered a classic down the road, probably not, but in my book they crush and hope to see them live one day. If you're a fan of the deathcore genre this is a must have, if you're hyper critical of heavy brutal music-just stay the hell away and listen to your cheesy trivium or children of bodom.

2.0 out of 5 stars De Ja Vu, April 11, 2009

Here we go again, the whole deathcore genre has been played out. When I mean played out, I mean it's been used and sold until you couldn't get an ounce more out of it.

Oceano are prime examples of what are good musicians playing bland music. Unfortunately for the other reviewers zeal, the same can't be said for me. A lot of awkward placed breakdowns are present. It had the makings of a good album, but suffers from the same down-tuned, passionless filth we are being over saturated with.

Take any track on this album and listen to any other dozen albums and you'll feel like you've got a major sense of identity crisis going on. Which there is. Too many bands doing the same thing is never good.

The only real upside I can say about this band is the production of the CD was excellent. Outside of that, you'd be a fool to think you've come into a new band.

5.0 out of 5 stars what are these guys angry about?, April 13, 2009
This review is from: Depths (Bonus Dvd) (Audio CD)
Oceano is a new band on the Earache roster, but don't that fool you. these guys are out to blow you away. I have heard of deathcore, but never experienced it until today. the drums sound totally inhuman, as if Robocop were playing them. although it is a spoiler, the DVD shows you what the band does. the metal community experienced Job For A Cowboy, now let it experience Oceano. the question on my mind is what is the next deathcore band to come out of the woodwork?

4.0 out of 5 stars Not traditional..., May 28, 2010
This review is from: Depths (Bonus Dvd) (Audio CD)
Oceano is a different sort of deathcore. Most deathcore revolves around fast playing and brutal breakdowns, with a mix of fantasy lyrics with a bit of death metal. The thing about Oceano that sets them apart from most deathcore is that the band isn't really fast. Most songs are mid tempo, and the first real song, Inhuman Affliction, plods along but never really speeds up to what we all know as deathcore. Unlike Winds Of Plague, who play fast and hard, Oceano just plays hard but rarely ever plays fast. The drums are fast, of course, but the guitars like to just plod along. It's not a bad thing, it's just not the best. But regardless of that fact, I really do love the singers voice. He has a death scream that is brutal as all hell, and his high shriek is to die for. The only reason I give this CD four stars is because it is rather hard to tell one song from the next upon first listen. They pretty much all start the same and have relatively the same song structure, so it's difficult to tell song two from song ten. Other than that, it's a pretty good CD from a band that shows a lot of potential.

3.0 out of 5 stars Typical Deathcore, April 24, 2010
By
Nate (California, USA) - See all my reviews

I agree with reviewer MTTS about his deja vu when hearing this album, there's really nothing new hear that another death core group hasn't done. Everything is so played out and typical, i get the feeling that i know whats gonna happen next when hearing the songs on this album or any death core album for that matter. On a positive note the production is top notch and crisp, guitar tones and drums sound amazing! unfortunately the music doesn't match the production value, theres wayyyyy too many albums here on amazon with 4 or 5 star ratings that do not deserve them, its very misleading! i got this album months ago after reading reviews here on amazon, at the time it had a 5 star rating, luckily i just downloaded this album instead of buying it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Decent, but you guys gotta represent Chicago better next album..., January 8, 2010
By
This review is from: Depths (MP3 Download)
When I heard these guys were from Chicago[hometown] I got excited to hear if they were any good. Alas, they're okay. They aren't bad[not as bad as some other people out there seem to think at least]. But, they need some work. They have the potential to make some great stuff, I'm sure. There is no question they can play. They just need to get more creative. You can't have an intriguing name like "Oceano" without intriguing music to go with it. I don't know...add some deep ocean like sounds in there somehow or something. Make your music stand out. All Shall Perish did not thrill me with their debut. But, their 2 follow-ups more than made up for it. I'm hoping you guys can do the same because if not then the next review might be one less star. -_-
