REVIEW TAKEN FROM PiTRiFF ONLINE REVIEWS,
By L. King "Lance King-Vocalist in Metal and CEO... (Minneapolis / St. Paul, MN USA) - See all my reviews (REAL NAME)
This review is from: From the Depths of Time (Audio CD)
AVIAN plays exactly the kind of progressive power metal that I enjoy. They keep the time changes to a minimum and the guitars with a consistent crunch. Two of my favorite progressive albums of the last few years have been BALANCE OF POWER's Heathen Machine (which was thier first without King on vocals) and MAGNITUDE 9's Decoding the Soul (which featured new BALANCE OF POWER and SECTION 16 singer Corey Brown) and From the Depths of Time matches up very favorably to both of them. They keep the sound full because of the excellent work of the rhythm section of Ellefson, drummer David Small and keyboardist Jonah Weingarten (PYRAMAZE). Their efforts are a pleasant wave that washes across Leviathan's riffs in a wonderful mix. Guitar solos are handled fantastically by Roger Moore in keeping with progressive virtuosos like Rob Johnson and John Petrucci. All this is so well done in fact that at times they almost drown out the awesome voice of Lance King. He seems a little dialed back in the mix, nowhere near as dynamic as he sounded on say, Perfect Balance. That would be my only complaint actually, this man can seriously soar when unleashed and I was hoping to hear some of that here.
There are simply no bad songs on this album. There is also no real ballads, which is a nice touch. Instead they change the pacing of the tracks throughout the album and keep the album flowing smoothly. The album is almost an hour long, but it goes down so smooth that it is over before you know it. I have spun this CD constantly since it arrived and it just keeps getting better. Like most great progressive albums you will keep discovering different nuances each time you listen to it. PITRIFF RATING - 9/10

Very Impressive,

This is truly an amazing CD. The track As the World Burns is a must listen and a great song to kick off this solid album. The solo work on Black Masaquerade is air guitar worthy. City of Peace and Time is All We Need really showcase the brilliant song writing of Yan Leviathan. This is an album that will be timeless and is one the best debut efforts I have ever heard. I look forward to enjoying future projects from this band and seeing them on tour (must come to Phoenix!). Keep up the great work!

Avian - From the Depths of Time,

First off, I want to express how much I love the artwork of Avian's debut CD entitled, From the Depths of Time! It truly is some of the coolest I've seen since Iron Maiden's, Seventh Son of a Seventh Son!
Secondly, the music is as great as the front artwork! 2005 proved how how of a worker and capable that Lance King really is. He owns Nightmare Records and distribution, as well as singing lead in several differnt progressive/power metal bands located throughout the world! If that's not good enough, he still takes the time to communicate regularly and shows appreciation toward his fans! One of his latest projects, Avian, proves that the hard work doesn't stop now! From the Depths of Time offers up melodies, fantastic guitar playing, excellent lead vocals, and even a veteran superstar playing bass guitar, Dave Effelson, ex-Megadeth! From the Depths of Time has creative production values as well, giving the album a raw, spacey sound. The entire package from the artwork, musicianship, and production makes for what is predicted to be one of the strongest progressive/power metal release of this year! If you enjoy bands such as: Balance of Power, Pyramaze, TNT, and Dream Theater, you're sure to enjoy Avian's, From the Depths of Time.
