Considering that a very young and by German war ecstasy blinded Richthofen wrote this extraordinary diary-kind document of his personal journey from a cavalry cadet to THE most renowned WW I fighter plane ace and German war hero, one must forgive him his often blunt and sometimes insolent animosity towards the French, British and Russian adversaries . Richthofen's document echoes the chauvinism of a war hungry German aristocracy led by Field Marshall Paul von Hindenburg, General Erich Ludendorff and - last but not least - Emperor Wilhelm II.

From a pilot's perspective "Der Rote Kampfflieger" is a documentation of skillful flying and brave - some would argue insane - eagerness to engage the enemy in the air and on the ground during these early days of aviation.

The book was written on the instructions of the propaganda section of the German "Luftstreitkraefte". Perhaps its heavy censoring and editing took away from von Richthofen's own original style and may give the reader the false impression the "Red Baron" was just an arrogant nationalistic young officer with Teutonic patriotism (he later repudiated the book stating that he was "no longer that kind of person").

The young author so adequately describes the mood pioneer German aviators showed during the WW I defying death through dare devilish attitude.

The book ends in spring 1917. At this point the 25 year old Rittmeister von Richthofen could claim 50 victories. A few weeks later, on July 6, 1917, after having received the "Pour le Merite", the highest military honor in Germany at the time, the Red Baron sustained a serious head wound in air combat which is thought to have caused lasting damage and may be blamed to be one of the reasons he was shut down and killed on April 21, 1918.

A time document of highest value that should be looked at - and understood - through the glasses of the patriotic attitude during the Great War.

The book is interesting as a historical document of this period, not so much as a piece of literature. It shows the mentality of one of the most iconic figures of World War I and a first hand experience of the struggle. However, as with any historical document, keeping a critical distance is a recommended precaution and this particular book can be annoyingly chauvinistic at times.
