3.0 out of 5 stars so - so
I got this set when I decided to try shaving with a straight razor. This seemed like a good starter kit to see if I would actually enjoy using a straight razor or not.

The blades are good. They start out very sharp, although I don't like to use them more than 3 times; they seem like they don't retain their edge for too long.

The Ustura razor,...

5.0 out of 5 stars Not Really 'Straight-Razor' But Just As Close A Shave, April 8, 2008
This review is from: 300 Derby Professional Single Edge Razor Blades & 1 Straight Razor (Health and Beauty)
I've been looking for these blades for a while and never thought to check Amazon. So glad I did. Used by barbers all over the country, these razors cost about a penny each, but the quality is top-notch!

I was tired of getting ripped off for a pack of 8 cartridges; sure the razors were good, but do we need a blade that's the size of an eraser? And they keep coming out with "new" and "improved" shaving technology, some requiring batteries, while doing little to really improve our shave. Ever notice in the commercials how the guy has a perfect, even lather on his face? His face is already shaved before the lather is put on (most likely with a straight-razor), and no one that I know of tenderly applies cream to their face like that.

So I did research online for straight razors, the old fashion kind that you sharpen daily, and found them to be expensive and take a lot of care to maintain its sharpness. Being like most americans, I'm too lazy and don't have much time to spend on taking care of a razor blade. So I found that owning a traditional straight razor wasn't right for me. I found a kind that needed replaceable blades, and decided to go with that instead. The blades are cheap (double edged), but had to be broken in half in order to be used. Doing this, I found that the edge of the blade always had a bend in it, and never sat quite right in the holder. I saw my barber using blades already cut, and asked about it. He said to check out a beauty supply store, but my search always came up empty.

This is a great deal, getting 300 blades, plus a holder to do some shaving. No need to worry about slicing your fingers while bending a double-edged blade. Each blade is individually wrapped and is very easy to change.

If you've never shaved with a straight razor before, do some searching online or ask someone who has for advice. It takes practice and patience, but is well worth it.

3.0 out of 5 stars so - so, March 4, 2009

I got this set when I decided to try shaving with a straight razor. This seemed like a good starter kit to see if I would actually enjoy using a straight razor or not.

The blades are good. They start out very sharp, although I don't like to use them more than 3 times; they seem like they don't retain their edge for too long.

The Ustura razor, however, is not impressive at all. The quality is very cheap. The handle is oddly shaped, wider at the hinge end and narrower at the other end. The blade mechanism doesn't stop when it's open; it can continue to swing backwards, as there is no solid body to catch the thumb opener latch. The blade mechanism is made out of two pieces of stamped metal; you put the blade into a little slide and then slide it into a larger piece of metal. There is no way to lock the slide in; it may slide out a little as you shave, and you just have to push it back in.

I have discovered that I am able to shave with a straight razor, and that I enjoy it as well. However, I will eventually be looking for a handle that isn't as shoddy as this one.

Although it takes a bit more practice to get good with the straight razor, this is still a wonderful product. I just shaved with it and my face is definately smoother than I can usually get it with a two or three blade system. Also, the blades on this product last longer somehow. I've shaved every to every other day for the last 3 weeks now and I've only gone through 4 of 300 blades, so my $20 investment should last me in the ballpark of 3 years or so. Compare that with how much money you would have to spend on the mach3 or something similar and it's a deal.

Does the job well and is very cheap. Not as good looking as a straight razor but highly recommended to start with.

I have used the razor about five times for giving haircuts and shaving. This is the first straight razor i've ever owned, but for the price it seems like a great buy.

The price is definitely right on this one! A couple shaves with this setup and I am completely hooked. I wanted to try shaving with a straight razor and didn't want to spend big money on slitting my throat on the first try so I opted for finding an inexpensive solution. This set had very good reviews and plenty of blades, so this is what I chose. I am so glad I did! The razor itself is not overly cheap feeling and it's comfortable to hold on to and easy to load with new blades. The blades are fantastic and way sharp and individually wrapped. You don't even have to break them in half, which is another concern I had. No cutting your fingers either! You cannot go wrong with this!

If your barber and just startin off u will need this to make your outline shaper. 300 razors can't beat that. The holder is allright.

Has been a great trainer razor. I'll hopefully be upgrading to a true straight blade, but believe this was a great way to get my feet wet into straight razor shaving.

This things is awesome, the blades are sharp as could be. Only complaint is that it is very plastic, kinda flimsy but works great. I have a real straight razor (non disposable) I have only got it sharp enough once to shave with but the weight was kinda nice. Over all I love this thing. Much easier than sharpening I just throw em out. One day I will invest in a more sturdy disposable but for now this is perfect.
