Biography

Generating molten heat right from the opening bars of first track, Coconut, the new Archie Bronson Outfit album, is a record full of deep riffs, spaced loops and the sound of a band reveling in both their individuality and intensity. Coconut is a record of barely contained ambition and ecstatic overload. The album was produced by DFA's Tim Goldsworthy (LCD Soundsystem, The Rapture, ... Editorial Reviews

"Derdang Derdang" is a compact marvel of high-strung energy and demented grooves. There's an intensity and urgency to the singing that might recall Pere Ubu for some, an angularity to the boys' riffing which has echoes of The Monks in its unhinged thrust and bluesy roots. They steeped themselves in soul music and Scandinavian psych, Faust, Son House, and The Gun Club, but the long gestation and careful editing means that, chiefly, The ABO sound like themselves. "An 11-song set that's melodically insidious and swings like a noose...check the counter riffing of 'Cherry Lips' or hypno-garage mantra 'Kink'" - Mojo.

my favorite magazine, the british publication "mojo," picked this as the fifth best album of 2006, right after bruce springsteen's "we shall overcome." and a fine recording this is. fresh and energetic, it brings to my mind the post-punk sounds of the early, early 80's. think of "the cure," only with a more raw, edgier, harder rocking sound. there are slashing guitars and passionate vocals galore on this excellent release, which i highly recommend.

Archie Bronson Outfit is a 3-piece from England, with a sound that I have a very hard time defining. They have a few characteristics: the singer's wail of a voice, the guitar's twang, the drummer's determined, staccato beats, that do define their sound, but I can't seem to give their music a proper description. What I can say is that their sound is totally different from anything I have heard from any other band, and I like it. They are original, I will give them that! Dart for My Sweetheart is so different and so amazingly infectious, that a lot of the time I begin the disc by listening to that track and I end up repeating it, I love it that much. Other highlights are Cherry Lips, Kink, Got To Get, Cuckoo, Jab Jab, and Rituals. My second favorite track is Dead Funny, which has the same sort of vibe & flow as Dart does, musically; lyrically, Dead Funny is not for the faint of heart or easily offended. In fact, most of ABO's lyrics are about sex, to be blunt. They have some explicit lyrics scattered throughout the songs, and there are some very keen images in songs like Cherry Lips and Modern Lovers (a song that is stripped of guitar hooks and may take a few listens to get into, but it says plenty about a certain type of relationship many young people find themselves in these days!). I don't often find myself listening to the entire album start to finish, which is why I give it 4 stars, but there are enough really good to great songs here that anyone looking for something truly different (as indie rock fans often are) should give Derdang a listen. Supposedly, Derdang Derdang is a way of saying 'during the day, during the day', I'm guessing in England, where the ABO boys are from. And the lyrics are included, so there is NO doubt as to what they are singing about.

I really like this album a lot. "mojo" hit it right on the head - there is a sense of urgency and kinetic spirit here that really comes through the speakers. And the musicianship is very deceiving - there is a lot more going on than meets the ear. I would compare it to early Talking Heads, a little Iggy, a little Devo, even a little Clash perhaps... but a very unique, refreshing sound. I hope they continue to mine their instincts... they are terrific. And the singing is great. Very cool synchopation at times also. Buy this album!
