This show is WONDERFUL!!! My 15 month old has been obsessed with this show since he was 4 months old! The second season I would have to say is better than the first as the first season only had 13 minute segments of the show, and NONE of the songs or Dr. Scott the Paleontologist segments. In the second, third and forth seasons, they have added these to the show. My son LOVES the songs and dances to them so the first season was a disappointment in this aspect, but they redeemed themselves with the second season!

Dinosaur Train is one of those great ideas that too often disappoints. My three year-old likes it, so take my review in that light.

The premise is that a mix of young dinosaurs and a few adults ride a train visiting different dinosaur and related animals. There's singing, dancing, and an expert host (a real person).

Sometimes, it does a great job of introducing kids to an ancient world. Lots of dinosaurs are covered, with even one episode offering 26 from A-Z. Each is named with a familiar first name, followed by its species as a surname.

The animation is solid, reminiscent of the Veggie Tales series during its Big Idea heyday. There's especially good voice acting from "The Conductor," who acts as a tour guide.

Where it doesn't meet the mark:
* Dr. Scott the live action paleontologist (Scott D. Sampson), comes across stiff and unenthusiastic about his subject. He feels like a documentary host, not the leader of a kids' show. Sampson is a noted leader in his field, and a legitimate expert (currently Vice President of Research & Collections and Chief Curator at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science).
* The songs veer from silly to awkward, with rhythms and rhymes feeling forced like a bad Sunday school skit.
* The writing is weak, as there's little plot threading each episode together. Instead, it feels like school in cartoon form.
* The reality of dinosaur life is ignored. They are unrealistically mixed together, like a T-Rex hangs out with Pteranodons.

Despite its shortcomings, it works.

My grandkids all have loved Dinosaur Train. It keeps them all interested and excited. The antics of their favorites come up in conversations regularly. Fun with a bit of education thrown in! Great for toddlers.

My 2 and a half yr old loves all the songs, the different dinosaurs, and of course the train! He tries to sing the intro along with the show and walks around for hours after an episode singing "Dinosaur Train" over and over again. It is the cutest thing I have heard since my oldest was little. I on the other hand like how inclusive the characters are when meeting other dinosaurs for the first time. I also like how educational and informative the information relayed to my son is. Its an absolutely fabulous show for youngsters! I highly recommend it.

My kid loves this and talks a lot about stuff she learned from this show. The random dinosaur facts are useless in the long run, but it's sparked an interest in science and she's constantly telling us she has a hypothesis about this or that, which has led to fun discussions. She didn't care so much for this show last year. For her, the sweet spot seemed to start around four and a half years old.

Growing up with the land before time, I've always had a soft spot for dinosaurs. I was fast to try this, both my kids love it. 3 year old boy, 2 year old girl.
