Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-6-Stewart profiles two young superstar shortstops. Both Rodriguez, who plays for the Seattle Mariners, and New York Yankee Jeter are at the top of their games and have already posted impressive numbers in their brief careers. While the texts are pretty standard sports biographies, the attractive format with lots of full-color pictures and little sidebar facts on almost every page are sure to appeal to the intended audience. Unfortunately, both books take readers only through the 1998 season. These titles will prove popular with many young fans, but will leave them wanting more.

4.0 out of 5 stars Well-written!, September 13, 2001
By
Charles Jones (Roseland, NJ, United States) - See all my reviews
As a children's librarian, I am always looking to get guys "hooked" with a well-written and engaging story of a current sports hero, and this book is an excellent choice. It is appropriate for grades 5 to high school. It's even a quick enjoyable read for adults.
Its narrative style instantly engages the reader by relating the the story of Derek's fascination with the Yankees as a young boy and the personal journey that led to the realization of his dream.
The book also relates information about his family, his personal stats, and other interesting details of his life and career.
I very much look forward to the other sports biographies in this "Baseball's New Wave" series.

5.0 out of 5 stars What an AMAZING Man!!!!!!!!, November 23, 2005
A Kid's Review

The book Substance and Style- Derek Jeter, by Mark Stewart, is a biography of Derek Jeter.

This book is takes place on the baseball field in both Kalamazoo, Michigan, and Yankee Stadium. It's mostly about Derek Jeter growing up, practicing every single day, rain or shine, and trying to fulfill his dream to become a shortstop for the Yankees. When Jeter was growing up, a few kids made fun of him because he wanted to play shortstop so badly, that he practiced every day, and I think that they were jealous because he was a better baseball player. Read this book to learn about Derek Jeter.

I would give this book 5 stars because it shows that you can do anything that you want to if you work hard for it.

A great book! Very insightful about Jeter's life that kept me on the edge of my seat! If you're a devoted Jetermaniac, this is the book to buy!
