5.0 out of 5 stars Old Gills Has really out done himself, June 15, 2000
This review is from: Derek Jeter: Pride Of The Yankees (Mass Market Paperback)
I think Mr. Gills is a master craftman who deserve another chance. He has only written this one measly little book, but I believe he's got a bright future ahead. He is a bit verbose, but his description of Derek's kneecaps is priceless. I think anyone under the age of 10 will love this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Like its subject, this bio is hot, hot, hot!, March 11, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Derek Jeter: Pride Of The Yankees (Mass Market Paperback)
Great ballplayers, like great teams, don't just happen. They are the end result of meticulous (often painful and dreary) planning, revision and execution. But when greatness happensand Derek Jeter is a great player on one of the all-time great Yankee teamsthe results are dazzling.

Author Patrick Giles has succeeded in delivering the dazzle in this hot new bio of Yankee superstar shortstop Derek Jeter. He delves into the Derek Mystique--why he is a favorite of young fans (many of them young women), fellow players and the most hardened baseball watchers. Giles follows Jeter's upbringing in Michigan, his early successes (and failures) in the minor leagues and his eventual stardom on a World Championship ballclub and, in 1998, one of the greatest teams of all time.

But this is not just a baseball story. It's a story about celebrity, the ups and the downs of being in the public eye. Giles shows how young Jeter has worked to prepare himself for his success, to avoid being a flavor of the month (even if that means keeping a certain pop diva at arm's length).

Derek Jeter: Pride of the Yankees is as interesting, as inspiring, as entertaining and, yes, as hot as its subject!

3.0 out of 5 stars For "Teenie-Boppers" not adults, June 16, 2000
This review is from: Derek Jeter: Pride Of The Yankees (Mass Market Paperback)
The first 6 chapters are ok....but the information is very repetitive...from chpt 7 on is for hormonal little girls. The book does chronicle Derek's life but the author could not find enough material to fill the book...it repeats throught the book, a teenage girl would love this book, a person who is a baseball fan will find this painfull, a Jeter fan can get through it. Derek Jeter: A Yankee for the New Millennium is a much better book for baseball fans over the age of 17.
