4.0 out of 5 stars Allman Bros, Atlanta and Jazz ?
So what if you are related to one of the Allman Brothers ? If you have read the book "Midnight Riders" by Scott Freeman about the Allman Brothers, you'll find how many siblings they all have begetted. Plus also the number of players who had joined and became associated with the Allmans. Offhand I can think of Warren Haynes, Dangerous Dan, members of...

3.0 out of 5 stars Trucks is nasty.....just not on this album.
This album was recorded when Derek was about 18 (possibly even younger). The album consists of some Jazz standards and some original stuff. The band is solid and so is Trucks, but that is as much as I can really say. This album isn't very interesting and the slide playing gets pretty repetative. It was recorded over the course of two days so don't expect a refined...

So what if you are related to one of the Allman Brothers ? If you have read the book "Midnight Riders" by Scott Freeman about the Allman Brothers, you'll find how many siblings they all have begetted. Plus also the number of players who had joined and became associated with the Allmans. Offhand I can think of Warren Haynes, Dangerous Dan, members of Gregg Allman's band, members of Dickie Betts Band, Sea Level, Gregg Allman's sons and even Rees Wynan. But Derek Trucks is truely a direct decendant. He has Duane Allman's fat humbucker sliding tone and attack but laced in Dickie Bett's jazz leanings. He has infact taken song moulds like "In memory of Elizabeth Reed", "Hot 'Lanta", "Stormy Monday" and "Whipping Post" further into a jazzier environment. What you have here is not a Southern Rock band of the '70's in the vein of '38 Special, Lynyrd Skynyrd or even the Charlie Daniels Band. The Derek Trucks Band is unique in the sense they are more of a jazz outfit but playing with the feel and energy of the Southern Rebel tradition. The album can do with a few more vocal tracks as the instrumentals ultimately wears thin as Derek is the only soloist able to capture the listener. Perhaps their new album will offer more variety. Buy this album and begin collecting thier works as I can see better and greater things to come from Derek and the boys.

5.0 out of 5 stars Give him 10 years and he will be the best there is, July 5, 2001

I've been following this guy since he was 12, doing almost perfect Duane in little bars in Florida. This album was made when he was 18! Imagine a Southern slide guitar player tackling Coltrane at 18! The guy's heart is in the right place and his playing... well, not only does he have chops, he has a style all his own.

The band is hot, the guitar player even hotter. If he can keep it together and not attempt to assimilate everything, keep his own style, he will be awesome. Hell, he already is.

All the above not withstanding, here is very modest and restrained playing for a kid prodigy.

Imagine Coltrane/Allman Bros. This is an excellent CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Jazz!!!, April 1, 1999

Personally, I like this album better than "Out of the Madness" (which is hard to beat). Derek and the rest of the band show their true talent, JAZZ! These guys can play! Oh yeah, and Derek was only 16 years old when they recorded this. Imaging what he'll be like in 10 years. Keep on Rockin'!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great jamming and jazzy tunes, February 7, 2006
By
This review is from: Derek Trucks (Audio CD)
Derek Trucks 1st CD is a little more jazzy than some later efforts. Coltrane and Miles Davis tunes are covered here along with original material. I bought this CD at a concert where Derek was the opening act for Gregg Allman. Derek played his set and guested on a few Gregg Allman songs. He wasn't yet a member of the Allman Brothers Band but was in the loop though.
Sorry to see that this is out of print as it is well worth hearing and owning.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Slide Guitarist., April 9, 2000
By
This review is from: Derek Trucks (Audio CD)
This cd is the best cd I own. When I listen to it, its like I feel the way he does. Some of the songs are just so powerful and have so much feeling, he's amazing. After meeting Derek I have such a great appreciation for him and his music. If you don't have this cd or Out of the Madness you really are missing out!

5.0 out of 5 stars Derek Trucks continues ABB traditions, August 26, 2001

This is a great album for such a young performer. Derek Trucks displays the same talent on the slide guitar of Duane Allman and Warren Haynes. I first heard him perform live in 1996 and was not impressed, but I listened and watched him develop since, and I am impressed more and more. I have seen him play with the Allman Brothers twice and you'd Duane Allman had risen from the grave. In contrast to Kenny Wayne Shepherd and Jonny Lang, Trucks has more diversity.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Kids got talent., January 5, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Derek Trucks (Audio CD)
Derek Trucks is a child of God sent to us for ridding our souls of the terrible music we listened to in the 80's. This is incredible Kids. The cd contains everything from Indian music to Jazz music to straight up jammin ROCK & ROLL(derived from pure blues, of course). You can't go wrong with this cd. The Kids got talent.

This album was recorded when Derek was about 18 (possibly even younger). The album consists of some Jazz standards and some original stuff. The band is solid and so is Trucks, but that is as much as I can really say. This album isn't very interesting and the slide playing gets pretty repetative. It was recorded over the course of two days so don't expect a refined masterpiece, it sounds like they just got in the studio and played and tried not to get too carried away in order to lay down clean tracks. Derek is an exeptional guitarist, easily one of the best around today and he has gotten SO much better since the release of this album. His playing now is light years ahead of his playing on this album. I enjoy this album because I can listen to it and think about how far he has come and how far he has to go. This album only represents the begining of true greatness but it lacks that "one of a kind" feel. I recomend his second album (even though his current playing is still light years ahead of that one too). It is a more mature album with some nitty gritty playing, he gets really dirty on that one. The bottom line is that this is a decent album, just not great by any means. I highly recomend trying to get your hands on any of his more recent stuff, it is simply mind boggling.

4.0 out of 5 stars Go direct to Hittin the note website, October 22, 2010
By
This review is from: Derek Trucks (Audio CD)
You can find all of Derek Trucks C.D.'s at the site called Hittin the Note <google it>. It's an ABB site and they have all Derek Trucks
merchandise as well as Allman Bros Band, etc.
I just bought this C.D. for $15.00 from the site....bought many more for the same price, a DVD from Chgo performance at Park West <Songlines> that backs up their live C.D. Roadsongs from the same venue. Price on each off their site is $15.00. (The C.D. is a double)

Support the band and buy direct from this site. I've ordered a couple times..a shirt too, which I love!!!

I use Amazon for many things...but for Derek Trucks, I will go to Hittin the note.
