Book Description

August 23, 1994
Winner of the 1992 Nobel Prize for Literature, an Obie Award, and scores of other honors, the brilliant poet, essayist, and playwright Derek Walcott here reads excerpts from several of his works, including Omeros, Odyssey, and Collected Poems 1948-1984."Seeking to endow every word with personal and mythological significance, Walcott is one of those rare poets whose voice is so distinctive that the printed poems assume a richer texture after hearing him read them." Library Journal

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Casual listeners beware: though this tape contains some short, accessible poems, 1992 Nobel prize winner Walcott makes his audience earn them by first paying close attention to selections from his longer works. This seems somehow fitting from the same poet who says, in a later poem: "I earn my exile." Born in the West Indies and caught between the opposite poles of his African and British heritages, he piles on Greek tragedy (playfully pointing out that most people find Greek and African dialects equally unintelligible). Long poems based on Homer and The Odyssey are stunningly transformed into 20th-century Afro-English tales, complete with Vaseline, neon signs, Coca-Cola, and dominoes. Seeming to endow every word with personal and mythological significance, Walcott is one of those rare poets (like Ezra Pound or Charles Simic) whose voice is so distinctive that the printed poems assume a richer texture after hearing him read them. This is a first audio collection of his works. For most serious collections.
