Book Description

July 9, 2002

This is a new edition of an encyclopedic handbook on essential dermatological differential diagnosis. Organized around novel and easy-to-use classified skin lesions, the first part of the book provides both a morphological and regional approach to differential diagnosis of cutaneous lesions, with diseases sub-classified according to characteristics (vascular, infectious, etc.). The book's second part, 'Pearls,' aids diagnosis by presenting new approaches. The last chapter provides characteristic morphologic and other features of different eruptions. This book has the diagnostic material every resident and professional dermatologist must have to provide the diagnostic material to practice effectively and efficiently.

1.0 out of 5 stars An unindexed book of lists, July 27, 2006
This review is from: Dermatological Differential Diagnosis and Pearls, Second Edition (Hardcover)
I purchased this book with a certificate looking for a useful book for a clinical dermatologist. Most other dermatological books in this price range seem oriented toward primary care providers with generally basic information on common dermatologic conditions. I was attracted by the editorial reviews and book info citing a best selling encyclopedic handbook which every resident and professional dermatologist must have. What I got was a 348 page unindexed book of lists listing such things as presumably every possible diagnosis for things such as a macule and patch: leprosy, secondary syphilis, etc. Most of the book is such lists. I find it difficult to retain much after reading a book of lists and the lists are too extensive to be of much use. The only way to find things is by flipping through 348 pages or using the table of contents. Not very helpful for a busy clinician. One semiuseful part is labelled "some diseases and syndromes highlighted" where it lists the diagnostic features of various conditions, however the table of contents identifies the featured diseases only by "group 1", "group 2" etc. The book ends with concise descriptions of various dermatological conditions, usually several to a page which are listed alphabetically in the table of contents. I do not expect to use the book much. I would have been better off with a basic book geared toward primary care providers. I guess some may find it useful as it appears to be encyclopedic, as long as you do not mind a book consisting primarily of lists.
