It's a nice suprise to see these two Derringer band albums released together on one CD by British reissue company BGO records, making this disc a good value. Rick Derringer was the first concert I ever went to, around the time "Derringer" came out, I still remember it as a great concert, Rick was really into it. It's due time that artists like Rick Derringer and Johnny Winter (who also has a BGO disc) have some more of their full albums come out on cd. They were two excellent guitarists. After being in the limelight for awhile with the hit single from 1973's "All American Boy"- "Rock and roll Hoochie Koo", Derringer spent the next few years doing sessions with other bands (Edgar Winter Group and also Steely Dan's "Countdown to ecstacy" and "Katy Lied"). There is some speculation that Steely Dan offered him to stay on, and later wrote "Rikki don't lose that number" about it. 1975 saw the release of another solo album "Spring fever" which I felt was an overall stronger record than All American Boy, but it did'nt sell as well. These 2 Derringer band albums were ones I had on Lp, they rock harder than his previous solo albums but for whatever reasons did not attain the success of All American Boy. There are some weak tunes, but also some of the best Derringer recorded are here- "Loosen up your Grip", "Sitting by the Pool", "sweet evil". "Comes a woman" etc. RD could lay down some riff, anyone who saw him live in his prime knows this. Buy this disc and get ready to rock out.

I always heard that Rick Derringer rocked. Unfortunately, the first album I ever got by him was All-American Boy, which is absolutely terrible except for Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo and maybe 1-2 other songs. Finally, after 25 years, I decided to take a chance on another of his albums and got this double disc set after seeing a reference to it online. This time I was not disappointed. This cd is full of great guitar and great songs--especially when it gets to the Sweet Evil tracks. I'll be listening to this a lot.

All the Above Reviewers Got It Right...,

First off, Rick Derringer is/was one of the most underrated guitar players alive. His passion for the music always comes through, even making some weaker songs strong. Always one to surround himself w/other great musicians, the more they seem to push Rick, the better he is. If you love these LPs, such as I do, you will have to get your paws on Live. I waited forever for this gem to get out, and now it is available. And speaking of Live, try out the Live at the Paradise Theater CD (recorded live in Boston for a radio show, it kicks ass!). Great songs, great performance, and yes again, great friggin' guitar!

ROCK AND ROLL CREATURE,

This review is from: Derringer/Sweet Evil (Audio CD)
Rick Derringer is an all American rock and roll creature with passion and energy to spare. This guy has done an actual ton of stuff--writing, recording, performing, guesting, producing--excellent output. Long career. Lots to like. Derringer, the album, is quite a bit different than the loose feel of his 1973 All American Boy. Tighter, maybe. Starts with Let Me In which sounds radio ready for those days. Sailor and Beyond the Universe are clear standouts. Wish there were more of those. He treads the pedestrian way with some of these tunes, but they are always superbly done and fun. I wouldn't call any of it deep--deep enough for me. On to Sweet Evil. Sitting by the Pool has interesting chording and punctuation happening. One-Eyed Jack all good. Sweet Evil the title tune is time zone good and probably the most distinctive thing here. For some reason I really like Driving Sideways--typical in an atypical way. I Didn't Ask to be Born finishes it off with the funky. As far as critical tests go, this might not stand out--and many are far more critical than I--I find these records full of crunchy, funky, cruising goodness. And perfect for fighting off early onset geezeritis.

I was 16 going to Madison Square Garden to see Terrible Ted open for AEROSMITH, It couldnt get much better. This clown comes on stage and says Teds not coming, then he immediately introduces DERRINGER. Brandishing 2 great lead guitars and a dozen great songs they really Rocked the Garden. Ted himself would have been proud for sure. These were that bands 2 very best albums and this is some truly great 70's hard rock. Something between the styles of Aerosmith and Johnny Winter. I saw DERRINGER several more times the next summer at some bar in the Watchung mountains Awesome shows every night, especially after i owned these albums.

World's best guitarist, best rock song, best CD!,
This review is from: Derringer/Sweet Evil (Audio CD)
I agree with Holy Grail and Due. At my first concert, I was introduced to Rick's guitar many years ago when he was still a "wild" man! The dueling guitars of Derringer, Aaronson, and Johnson climaxed by a police siren (played by Rick) in "Sweet Evil" is something you never forget! Derringer's funky "I Didn't Ask to be Born" and "Sittin' by the Pool" show musical imagination far beyond what Rick has ever received credit for, in addition to providing a look into the a very self-assured musician's mind at that time. It would have been a shame if these wonderful songs had not made it into CD form!! I just got the "Blues Delux" CD. For those of you who like the "Stevie Ray" sound, and miss him, but can't get enough of Rick's wonderful voice and pickin', this one's for you! The best Derringer "blues" CD I've heard yet!

Holy Grail,

This review is from: Derringer/Sweet Evil (Audio CD)
I have been to the mountain and drank from the river and now the Holy Grail is in my hand!I have long awaited this album (sweet evil) to be released on cd!With "drivin sideways" playin in the background ,I want to tell you how much I love this cd!There are almost no words to expess my joy but I will try...first of all this is a two for the price of one cd so ,talk about a bargain! Many people have paid a pretty penny for a copy of this cd on ebay. Now first of all I have owned a copy of the first derringer cd autographed (by rick derringer) for quiet sometime and it is a great cd in itself."let me in","sailor" and "beyond the universe" are my favorites from that one. Now for the long awaited "Sweet Evil": with the opening cords of "don't stop loving me" you know this ain't just a overnight fling!!i cant believe this wasnt a hit song!!!it has all the right stuff /great sing along corus ,great guitar and cool solo .awesome vocals and the words are heartfelt!dont stop lovin me and I wont stop lovin'you!then we get some of the best rock guitar ever and another (shoulda been a hit) "sittin by the pool",now this one is one of my all time favorite songs---sure beats new york city ,cause its the livin end!on this cd we get two songs penned by danny johnson which are very awesome !!!"one -eyed jack" and "drivin' side ways"both are masterpieces. There is just something about this reggae influenced rock song that really sings to me.i just love the sound of danny and ricks guitar duo.and we finally get the erily devine "sweet evil" with its melancholy verses that draw you in only to erupt into the bridge with the ambulance jam /it leaves you screaming for more...every song on here is great ,no clunkers here. The band is awesome rick and danny with kenny aaronson on bass and vinny appice on drums and the sound is great! now i have the cd.so if you like rock n roll this one is a long lost gem that has finally gotten to see the light of day.thank you bgo thank you amazon thank you derringer..you have made me a happy man!
