The paper you use makes a huge difference. I initially used this on regular cardstock and the colors were very muted and blending was horrible and nearly non-existent. I then tried it on higher quality cardstock (Spectrum Noir) paper and the colors were more vibrant - but no where near what I saw on Derwent's videos. I started to wonder if some of the videos were faked or that maybe another product was used for the demonstrations. Then I tried it on Strathmore watercolor paper and all I can say is - wow! The colors were 2-3 times brighter and just popped. The blending was great. Since these are color-fast and fade-resistant, my masterpieces will last. One YouTube reviewer said he exposed his painting to sun for 6 months and noticed no fading, while other cheaper brands had fading.

I use these to make cards with. I stamp images and then color them and needed something with vibrant colors that blended well. I didn't want to use my kid's college education on Copic markers that eventually dried out. With the watercolor, it gives me the color saturation and blending that is similar to Copic markers. The only reason why I didn't start using these on watercolor paper was because my watercolor papers tended to be an off-white color. Once you put the finished painting on white cardstock to make the cards, it didn't quite match. I have found out that getting a truly white paper will be nearly impossible, however, since the chemicals used to bleach the paper actual degrades the paper and reduces/eliminates their archival properties.

I am hooked. Once my skills improve, I might even venture into painting my own watercolor masterpieces. Below are some examples of the results you can get with stamps and Inktense. The flowers were done on Spectrum Noir paper and the little girls were done on watercolor paper. I would not recommend getting anything bigger than the 24 pencil set unless you are a real artist and can really differentiate between the very slight color tones in the big set. Since these are watercolors, you can use more or less ink with more or less water to get 2-3 shade out of one pencil. You can also blend colors to get more colors.

I ordered these pencils because I've worked with various types of watercolors (tubes, solids, etc.) with mixed results. My problem is getting sharp detail with a brush. The problem isn't with the watercolors or my brushes as I buy quality items, but with my skill level (or lack thereof). Still, I enjoy working with watercolors as a form of expression and self-therapy! These pencils make it easier for me to work finer details into projects I am doing. I find these pencils very versatile. They work like a colored pencil when dry and like a very rich, heavily pigmented watercolor when wet - but you can, of course, adjust the intensity of the color by using more or less water. Also, if you can shave some of the pencil off - or mix it with water on the paper - if you want to combine more than one color.

I received my first set of these pencils as a gift about 30 years ago when I was 15 and have continued to purchase new (and larger) sets over time. I've tried a couple of other brands, but haven't been as satisfied. These pencils are an integral part of my art therapy and because they work well and are easy to control, they reduce my frustation level (a must for my art therapy to be a joy)!!

Finally, I must mention the tin, which is great. Sure, you're paying more than if the pencils came in a box, but the tin is great - you can keep all the colors in order (if you're that type of person) and it stays nicely closed (when in horizontal position) and is smooth and professional looking, which makes these look all the better for a gift. I've purchased three sets of these as gifts and everyone has loved them, from the young budding artist to the adult who likes to tinker with various mediums, but knows and appreciates quality materials. If you order them, I hope you enjoy!!

I have been an abstract watercolor artist for more then 20 years, I have used several different brands of pencils, Rexel Derwent are without an question simply the best you can buy, they have out standing quality in both blending and pigment, the fills are very durable and have never had any breakage. Spend the money, you will not be disappointed.

Lots of great reviews for Derwent. Well deserved for most reasons.........BUT.......if you are a fan of rich, vibrant, translucent color, these aren't the ones........Like mellow, opaque, or more sombre shades?...... use these. Otherwise die hard Derwent fans, use their Aquarelle Sticks, which for some reason are slightly more rich and seem more saturating.....I've had some very sunny results with them....or definitely, Inktense, if you are fast and loose. Inktense are beautiful, bold, rich color.........They also dry faster than greased lightening....Amazing results if you are free and loose. Slower and you'll be left out in the rain, like me......See the independent comparison demos on Youtube.....Devotedly, I still bought a 36pc set..... Sad. Derwent is one of the oldest and most respected companies in the business.....And loyal Brit's paint some lovely, gentle work with these pencils......Among the devotees, my earliest teacher.....I'm not saying the quality isn't good.......These colors just don't have Zing and definitely do not sing on the paper for me. I use Caran d'Ache Supraclor for everything now.

THis is a high quality product. You get consistant tones, and it's easy to work with. You can do your completed painting with them, or use them for a quick on the scene study for a more complete work later. Either way, you'll love the colors you get with these pencils. Plus, they are made in England, not China, so the product quality is the same everytime you buy them, and it won't kill you dog.

I have these pencils and I use them frequently to create watercolor images that I turn into handmade greeting cards. They draw smoothly and the colors are beautifully vibrant.

These water color pencils are versatile. They can be used like regular color pencils or washed with a wet brush for a water color effect. Combine the large areas of regular water colors and add detail with the pencils. They are so much better than the water color pencils offered years ago.

I'm so glad I bought these watercolor pencils! I really enjoy using them.

I think they work especially well for multimedia projects; it's very easy to get color exactly where you want it, and you can get a "watercolor" appearance without having to own a really fancy watercolor set or spend a great deal of time doing watercolors. It is still easy to blend colors, so you're not restricted to these 12 colors.

At church I teach a class of children and last year I had the 6 year-old kids. We did a multimedia project where I had them coloring with different sorts of things and using glue to affix tissue paper and so forth. I had them use these watercolor pencils to color one particular part to give it a special dream-like effect. They loved it! I don't think I really could have brought paints and a bunch of water and paintbrushes because they were all in church clothes...but it was very easy to have them color their stuff and then pass out pre-moistened Q-tips for them to wet the watercolor part and create the watercolor effect. It really added something, and was a fun change from using crayons like we normally do.

I personally enjoy using these to make small drawings which I first draw in pencil, paint using these watercolor pencils, and then after the painting is dry I go back and use a black pigma pen to trace my pencil lines. It creates a sort of illustration that frees up loose emotions, despite the fact that I am not extremely artistic.

Anyhow, in summary, these pencils are great! The lead is not too hard or too soft. They sharpen well. Once you've drawn something, adding water causes the color to behave like watercolor, instead of only sticking to the place you've drawn. The colors are vibrant. These work great for adults and children alike, and they are a great addition to an art box. The tin is fantastic for keeping everything together (unlike crayon and marker boxes that tend to get crushed or rip, etc.). I highly recommend these as a gift for an artistic young person, or for anyone interested in a new medium that is not overly complicated.
