Good product but high maintenance, October 7, 2009
We bought one of these in 2001 and have used it in our cabin every winter. It provides good heat with a fairly realistic looking fire but so far we have had to replace the pilot assembly twice and the main control valve once. In addition to this we have to remove and clean the pilot assembly every one to two months.

great for the price, September 13, 2010
This review is from: Desa Heating Llc 26000Btu Lp Firebox Cgcftp Gas Heater & Accessories (Misc.)
For the price you can't beat this little stove. Most other units are 2-3x as much. Of course, it's not a heavy-duty unit, and it's almost certainly made in China.
Before you get a vent free gas fireplace, be aware that THE COMBUSTION PRODUCTS VENT DIRECTLY INTO YOUR AIR!
Having said that, remember that:
1 the primary product of the burning is water,
2 it vents into the air the same way a gas range does (many people use gas ranges and they haven't yet outlawed them), and
3 it's got a shutoff if the CO gets too high (but it's still a good idea to use a CO alarm near the unit).
We only use ours a couple hours a day at the most in the winter and it's in a large room, so we haven't seen any problems from soot or water vapor at all. When I just started it up, the pilot lit, then the unit went on, then shut off about a minute later. I had read somewhere that the pilot assembly can get clogged. I blew out the unit with compressed air, and it started right up again.
