Book Description

Grandpa Joe’s town has always been controlled by the enemy, who walks openly among them. Yet, Max has always felt safer there than anywhere else. Until now that is. A perfect killer is on the loose. One that not only destroys a person’s body, but steals their soul.
Kacha, the changeling, has unlocked the secrets of the ancient magical book and is building a new hourglass and gateway. He discovers how to construct a powerful weapon called “The Demon’s Fork,” which allows him to capture the souls of everyone in the entire town, all at once. Kacha uses this curse on Grandpa’s town to distract Max and the others so he can complete his ultimate goal of capturing descendants of magical ancestry to fill his hourglass.
The hunt for Kacha leads Max and his friends on a dangerous quest as they try to capture Kacha before he is able to complete his evil plans. Secrecy will be the key to avoid an even deadlier situation.

4.0 out of 5 stars adventurous July 23, 2011
Format:Paperback
The saga continues with more intrigue, closer relationships, and new settings. Our heroes, Max and Cindy, are learning persistence and strategy. Cochrane has used more locations (from New York City to Juneau, Alaska) while still serving up situations that demand quick thinking, determination, and even skill at sliding into first base.
Intriguingly, the fantasy is reasonable: if you found a teacher and practiced hard, you too could cast these spells.

This is quick-paced adventure, without being gory. The characters start with family (all human beings, though some know magic) and go on to friends and enemies (magical beings with various skills and ambitions).
I enjoyed the story. Yes, there's an exciting cliffhanger at the end.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tammy A September 15, 2012

Another exciting sequel, and more adventure for Max, his grandfather, and the rest of the gang.

This series has been very enjoyable to read. In addition to the stories, I've also enjoyed witnessing the author's maturing writing style. I'll continue to recommend these books to friends and their children, because they're refreshingly adventurous tales that are enjoyable, fun, fast paced and easy to read. I hope there are more adventures to come.

My thanks to the author for signing all three books for me.

Now I can't wait to read the authors' new Novella. Watch for it coming soon!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Max and the Gatekeeper Book III September 6, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This book was more suspenseful than its predecessor. Time seemed to always be running out. There were some surprises that I enjoyed and revelations. The bullies once again were in the midst of things and I wanted to get in the book and wipe them out. It was well written and once again left me wanting more. I think I will wait for the last book in the series and then reread them all again. That way I wont have to wait so long for the Ultimate end of it all.

4.0 out of 5 stars Review for The Descendant and the Demon's Fork September 19, 2011
Format:Paperback
This is the third installment in the Max and the Gatekeeper series and I have to say that I am pleasantly pleased about this series. In this book we get to see into the minds of the enemies, as Max and his family and friends have to fight to keep them from taking over New York City. Max has to learn how to fight enemies and learn how to be a teenager at the same time in this novel.

One of the things that I enjoy more about these books is the imagination in these stories. There is always new twists and turns and you never know what is going to happen next. I really enjoyed how the author keeps these novels on the realistic side, by allowing Max to receive help in his battles from adults, because I myself would find it very hard to believe if a child was in battle by himself. I am sure the in future we will see Max grow stronger and be able to face battle himself.

I would recommend this book for anyone who wants to go on a wild roller coaster ride full of action and adventure. If you enjoy lots of twists and turns then this is the book for you. I would have to say that middle schoolers would defiantly enjoy reading this novel. I can not wait to see what is in store for us in the next novel.
