DFD is a contemporary thriller featuring a WWI submarine loose on the Great Lakes. I'm pleased to report that response to the book has been better than anticipated. Newspapers, nautical associations and maritime museums have given DFD wonderful reviews, and reader feedback is overwhelmingly positive. This little book by an unknown author has made such a splash that its even managed to kindle a negative campaign against it by well meaning but misguided folks.
Although I appreciate the interest of "credentialed" literary professionals (who apparently have appreciable submarine knowledge I might add) their barbs are misplaced. Descending from Duty is not a historical study of WWII, and it is definitely not "literature." DFD is a thriller crafted to deliver a fun read at a fast pace.
So get your copy and clear the deck. She's out there stalking the Great Lakes...
Best Regards, J. Ryan Fenzel

Submarine Veteran Speaks,
By
This review is from: Descending from Duty (Paperback)
I rode 7 diesel-electric submarines in 22 years. To those other submarine veterans who maintain that the author was disrespectful to the USS Silversides because he 'took liberties' with actual facts, I say this: without that magical tool called 'A temporary suspension of disbelief,' we would have no decent written fiction--no comic strips, no fairy tales, and no William Shakespeare. Mr. Fenzel has written a truly gripping story, which ought to be made into a movie!

Outstanding read! Avid reader speaks.,
This review is from: Descending from Duty (Paperback)
I am a WWII buff and when "Descending from Duty" was recommended I had my reservations. After a little coaxing I decided to give it a chance. I can tell you that I thoroughly enjoyed the story. Using a vintage sub in a contemporary military thriller was unique and captivating. I have never been in the military, but I believe the author does a great job of capturing the many sides of our military personnel. I have recommended the book to friends and family. If you are looking for a book you won't want to put down, give "Descending from Duty" a chance and you won't regret it.

I'm not a veteran sub man or a NYC publisher but I do love to read books. This book was great! It kept me reading til all hours of the night with plenty of action and suspense. If you like this type of book you'll love Descending from Duty.
