4.0 out of 5 stars Submarine Veteran Speaks
I rode 7 diesel-electric submarines in 22 years. To those other submarine veterans who maintain that the author was disrespectful to the USS Silversides because he 'took liberties' with actual facts, I say this: without that magical tool called 'A temporary suspension of disbelief,' we would have no decent written fiction--no comic strips, no fairy tales, and no William...

1.0 out of 5 stars Amateurish Clancy wannabe, a me-too
This type of fiction should be at least halfway believable. At least Clancy's fiction is, and more technically accurate. Someone steeling an old submarine that hasn't run under its own power since WWII and turning it into any kind of threat is totally implausible. What, do the terrorists own a shipyard? Further, the sub would be sunk before it left the harbor. This is...

Mr. Fenzel has written a truly gripping story, which ought to be made into a movie!

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding read! Avid reader speaks., July 24, 2006
This review is from: Descending from Duty (Paperback)
I am a WWII buff and when "Descending from Duty" was recommended I had my reservations. After a little coaxing I decided to give it a chance. I can tell you that I thoroughly enjoyed the story. Using a vintage sub in a contemporary military thriller was unique and captivating. I have never been in the military, but I believe the author does a great job of capturing the many sides of our military personnel. I have recommended the book to friends and family. If you are looking for a book you won't want to put down, give "Descending from Duty" a chance and you won't regret it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good action adventure book, July 20, 2006

An excellent read. I used two days of my precious vacation to read it because I got hooked. The author is surprisingly accurate on alot of technical details while not dragging the story and keeping up the action. The plot sounds like it comes from today's headlines and could very well be considering tday's state of affairs. J. Ryan Fenzel reads like a Clancy novel but with a Great Lakes and midwestern background and approach. My type of book---action, detail, and a babe as one of the main characters!

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Read, October 28, 2006
This review is from: Descending from Duty (Paperback)
Decending From Duty by J. Ryan Fenzel is a fast paced thriller set in Michigan. I found the characters to be well drawn and the plot facinating and multi-layered. Being from Michigan, this tale of guilt and revenge was all the more engaging because of my familiarity with the locations.

The book is filled with nicely done tidbits, through the villan's use of the dead yellow jacket to the snappy reparte used by the Law Enforcement Officers to insult each other (and being a LEO it rings true..;-)).

I highly reccomend this book to any fans of the Political Thriller. In fact, I plan to buy a couple more copies myself and give them as gifts for Christmas.

5.0 out of 5 stars An engaging and gripping novel depicting the re-commissioned USS Silversides, April 9, 2006
This review is from: Descending from Duty (Paperback)
Decending From Duty by J. Ryan Fenzel is an engaging and gripping novel depicting the re-commissioned USS Silversides, its theft and subsequent campaign of destruction and death. With only ex-U.S. President Warren McCallum knowing the reason for the USS Silversides' re-commisioning and the refusal to share his knowledge, Dylan Reese gradually realizes the hell which he must eventually confront face-to-face. Descending From Duty is very strongly recommended for its realistic military fiction, conceptual understanding of the intricate works of national security, and the threat such an event would pose for the nation and the world.

5.0 out of 5 stars Descending from Duty, March 11, 2006
This review is from: Descending from Duty (Paperback)
This story kept me intrigued throughout. I started reading the book first thing on Saturday morning and it was completed Saturday evening. I lost an entire day, because the characters and storyline were written so well that I just couldn't put it down. Great story! I highly recommend this book to all readers, no matter what genre they enjoy, this covers all the bases.

I would LOVE to see a sequel!

5.0 out of 5 stars Terrorism on the Great Lakes, October 16, 2006
This review is from: Descending from Duty (Paperback)
I read this novel and really enjoyed it. It was fast paced and very hard to put down once I picked it up. As a former marine and in my current capacity as a Law Enforcement Officer, I have a job in which I work on terrorism issues for the State of Michigan. Everyone tends to think that Michigan is safe from terrorist attacks due to our location (far north & next to Canada) and also because we don't have the high population base of other states (i.e. California & New York). Mr. Fenzel brings the realistic fear of domestic terrorism to Michigan and how "un-protected" we actually are on the Great Lakes. Again, it was a great action thriller, and I hope other people enjoy it as much as I did.

5.0 out of 5 stars This novel was an exciting read., August 2, 2006
This review is from: Descending from Duty (Paperback)
Once I picked up this book I couldn't set it down until I had read the whole thing. I'm an avid reader who loves a good story, and this book was so good that I had to re-read it just to make sure that I hadn't missed anything. The way that the story was laid out let me get my bearings, then launched me into a story that I will never forget, and have already started encouraging others to read. Well .....what are you waiting for?!? Read it!

Descending From Duty was an excellent book. I could hardly put it down. The story line was great and it kept me on the edge to see what was going to happen next. It has a lot of substance for any reader. My wife and I usually read two different styles of books and she even enjoyed it. I highly recommend it for any reader and can honestly say, I have purchased a couple for my dad and brother.
