Editorial Reviews

"How do I even describe this book? If it was a recipe, I'd throw in some Harry Potter, a dash of Twilight, and a big container of romance and mix it all together and get something delectable." - Jillian Dodd, author of That Boy & That Wedding

"B.C. Burgess has written a novel that will stay in your mind for days after you have finished it. Her story will take you on a journey that will have your emotions all over the place. Once you pick up Descension you will not want to put it down. Do yourself a favour and grab a copy, you won't regret it."- Michelle (Ravelin's Sanctuary)

"I really enjoyed this book. The story line was new and refreshing, the characters loveable and interesting and the slow reveal of all the mysteries surrounding the protagonists was done with finesse. It is rare for a book to move me to tears but this one did." - Karen Bryant Doering (Parent's Little Black Book)

From the Author

Though I wrote the book, it took a small army to bring it to life. My love and appreciation overflows for all of them. To my mom--thank you for being my biggest fan and unofficial editor. To my sister, Lisa, and my friend, Amy--you gave me much more than financial support. I'll always remember your loving encouragement and will strive to pay it back and forward. To my avid readers--you are my cheerleading squad and lift my spirits when I'm low; especially you, Aunt Leona. You and your enthusiasm make me smile. To my editor, Kelly Schaub--thank you for guiding little ol' me around the pitfalls of writing long after you fulfilled your contractual promise. To the creators of my beautiful cover, Streetlight Graphics--I remain awed by how well you brought my vision to life, and I thank you for the compassionate and professional way you handled our project. And last but not least, to my amazing husband and son--without your support and patience, I wouldn't have been able to finish this book. You've given me a gift beyond measure, and I'll always hold it close to my heart. I love you guys.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Love Story June 26, 2012
By Vals
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
That's it; I truly loved this book. I lost account of how many times I caught myself shedding tears while reading it. Layla is a young, tormented woman with twenty one years old. She endured whole three years taking care of her beloved mother after she had a stroke, and now she is gone. Layla struggles to get over her loss, only to discover that her mother wasn't her real mother, that she had a real family somewhere and only a couple of cryptic clues to lead her to them. With her friends support, she decided to try her luck, but to do so, she would have to abandon her life and her friends and move through the country in direction to the unknown. She was scared and lonely, until she met the fabulous Quin. He was not only the perfection in flesh, he also was her link with her mysterious family. Then the story changes and the reader is dragged to her parents lives, Rhosewen and Aedan. The author guides us through a heartbreaking and tragic love story, spiced with lots of magic and treachery. It is obvious that the next book will be full of more unexpected events and I will make sure to read it.
What I liked: Everything. The magic, the love story, the coven's members relationships, the plot, the characters, the writing style, even the evil Argon, and the crazy Medea.
What I didn't like: Nothing.
I read this book in one day, incapable to put it down till the last page, so, according to my rules it sure is five stars. I recommend and the author is on my favorites list.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the BEST reads EVER! September 4, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
The magical spell that B.C casts upon you the reader will have you turning your pages faster and faster. Layla is a young woman only 21 years old, and in the last 3 years she has endured more than many people far older. Her time was spent working in a diner and taking care of her mother who had a stroke. Layla is struggling to overcome the loss of her mother when a secret changes her life. A secret her mother was sworn to protect to protect young Layla. Now with the death of her mother Layla not only has a fist full of money but also the knowledge that her mother isn't her biological mother. Her father left her with Katherine for protection leaving her only a few measly clues as to her true history, and if she could unravel the clues then she will find her real family. With the help of her friends she leaves her home to travel to Portland to begin the search. I don't want to give away too much of the book, I absolutely hate spoilers.

I will say that there she meets a young man Quin who has sworn to protect her and help her find out who she is. He breaks it to her quickly that he knows not only who she is but who her family is. And the entertainment we get while he is showing her magic is not only fun but you can actually picture the clearing and the actions of these two young people as they not only learn about her magic but also each other. This story does have an abrupt change in it from where we are in Layla's perspective to being in her Father and Mother's life. This is done in such a smooth way you barely notice and the heartbreaking and tragic love story that is the parents life is done in such a way to have you in tears. Even the enemy Media is done in such a way that you feel so sorry for her mental instability yet hate what she has done to this young couple. And Agro....

5.0 out of 5 stars Spellbinding May 27, 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
B C has cast her magical spell on everyone who reads her tale as we are left hungry for more of her beautiful Layla. Her writings give you a perfect picture in one's mind eye of some the wonderful scenery our country holds. But her talent excels in making you feel the emotions of the characters that pull at you heart strings. I can't wait for the second book of the series. This is a must read!

Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The book has awesome action! The beginning is a little slow but the futher along in the book you get, the more it pulls you in. I'm not the biggest fan of love stories but this book is a great read! There is a real tear- jerker scene that truly pulls on the heart strings. By the time I got to the end I just couldn't get enough. I just can't wait until the second book comes out!

2.0 out of 5 stars Not for me February 13, 2013
By acaito
Descension started off pretty good. I was intrigued the by the beginning chapters and the mystery that surrounded Layla's birth family and the "clues" her birth father left behind so she would be able to find them. I thought it was very interesting the Layla had no idea of her adoption, told to her through a letter written by her recently deceased mother, which lead to an every greater mystery effect.

Once she got there, however, I just couldn't get into the story. She immediately finds family - though she doesn't know it, we as readers do - and is thrust into the "Hey, you're a witch!"

Apparently there are magical families everywhere and Layla's family is one of two that live in this small town in Oregon. She unknowingly meets some of them before hand, but once she finds out she's a witch, she has zero interaction with any of them for the remainder of the novel.

The love story reminds me of the beginning of a high school romance. There is an immediate attraction between Quin and Layla, followed by "I can't believe how awesome/beautiful/talented you are." Really?

The entirety of the second half of the novel is the relationship between here parents through memories her father imprinted onto this ring. I have a few issues with this: some of the memories are sexual in nature (ew!) and how did the ring/box get to Layla's grandparents after her parents died (this is not a spoiler, we find out in chapter 1)/how did the memory of her father's death get to the ring if he had already given it to his parents for safe keeping. (I'm not writing this review right away, so I can't remember which scenario played out - if he had the ring with him when he died or if he gave it to his parents before hand.
