5.0 out of 5 stars One of the BEST books I have ever read!
Peter Telep does a great job portraying detail in this book. The characters are believable, there are many very suspenseful parts in the book, it never gets tedious or boring, and the overall plot, though based on a game, stands alone as one of the best I have ever read. I highly recommend this book to any and all who enjoy thrilling science fiction. It's also good for...

1.0 out of 5 stars waste of time
This book seems like it was written by a fifth grader. Like , the bad boy marine rolled his fighter over and was getting ready to fire his rocket!. ...Or... , Am gonna haft to kick butt now. Because hey , it's what I do.. This book is so poorly written that I found it to be a waste of time and money. Way too much money infact.. Buy it for your kid in...

5.0 out of 5 stars DESCENT IS OUTSTANDING !, October 24, 1999
This review is from: Descent (Book 1) (Mass Market Paperback)
Having played Descent when it first came out in 95 I felt that noone could do a book. But I was wrong. Author Peter Telep has made a great game into a great book. From the begining of the first chapter to the last chapter. I could not put the book down. Back to playing Descent.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic, October 25, 1999

This review is from: Descent (Book 1) (Mass Market Paperback)
I loved this book. I could not put it down once I started, and I took 4 hours out of my Sunday to read the last 150 pages. The strong points overrode the weaker points. I would have loved to see the breifing scene from the game, and would have liked more action, and thought it would have been cool to have more chapters from that Supervisor droid's perspective. (Like, chill dude!) But, the conflict between Dravis and Ornowski was great. Keep up the good work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Descent at its finest!, May 29, 2002

This review is from: Descent (Book 1) (Mass Market Paperback)
When I started reading this book, I had absolutely no idea how a person could turn the immersive but sometimes confusing world of mines, robots, and destruction into an immersive novel as well. I soon found out how as Telep not only manages to create an addicting world of nonstop action and adventure, but succeeds in creating a gripping storyline where an ex-marine named Benjamin St. John must race against the clock and his senior employer, Saumel Dravis, to save scientists and a prototype targeting system stranded in the robot driven, virus-infected PTMC, or Post Terran Mining Corporation, flagship mine on the Earth's moon. Many deadly suprises await the intrepid rescuer, however...

5.0 out of 5 stars Read This Novel!, November 14, 2001
By
This review is from: Descent (Book 1) (Mass Market Paperback)
This is one of my favorite books! I would definatley reccomend it to just about anybody. This book took me about two weeks to read. Most average readers would consider this a long time, but for me, who reads most books in about 3 months because I keep putting them down, two weeks is a very small time. I absolutley loved the suspense scenes with the Pyro-GX ships. It was absolutley outstanding!
If you're bored with other books or just bored with life itself, check this one out. You'll love it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Descent = BEST Book, October 9, 2001

To be honest, I must say that I expected DESCENT to be worse than the game, as it was released after. I was horribly wrong. Every time I read this book (which is several dozen times a year), I feel like i'm really in the cockpit of an illegally modified Pyro-GX, blasting mechs apart with a vengeance. This is the best book I have read in a long time, save for the other two books, DESCENT : Stealing Thunder and DESCENT : Equinox. I only hope there is a fourth.

5.0 out of 5 stars Get it...Read it...Get the next one...Read it...., September 10, 1999
This review is from: Descent (Book 1) (Mass Market Paperback)
The only problem is Peter should have started this series sooner. If you are a Descenter and haven't read this yet you are missing the Pyro.

This should be the start of a very popular series. I hope. Definately 5+ Stars

4.0 out of 5 stars Best Sci-Fi Action I've read in a long time, June 7, 1999

Telep's "Descent" combines great adventure with explosive action and believable characters. The multidimensional plot within the characters made this book a constant page-turner. If it wasn't for school, I'd have read it in a day!

The only reason it got a 4 was because it needed some slightly better editing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Tastes Like Chicken, September 26, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Descent (Book 1) (Mass Market Paperback)
Ever eat something, and decide that it tasted just like chicken? Well, that's somewhat how you'll feel after reading this book. In many respects, it's like so many other action/sci-fi stories: Hero (fighter jock) gets in trouble and gets second chance, meets beautiful women, has an arch-rival/nemesis, and ends up saving the day. What you have to realize while reading this story, though, is that it is the set up for an even deeper storyline. There are many potential plots visible once you look for them, but you have to be willing to accept a "starting point". Example: Star Wars Episode I. Unlike the movie Star Wars, we're not in the middle of a galactic fight against evil. We're dealing with a "trivial" trade disagreement. But the story is designed to lay the seeds of the characters we've all come to know and love. Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series: The first book is sometimes trite and even juvenile in its writing. But look where Mr. Jordan has taken the story from there. This stories greatest strength is where it tries to get into the mind of the hero. Yes, he's good at blasting things. But the author touches on his ideas of duty and honor that all true soldiers understand. And also bringing in the fact that there are some "civilians" who just can't understand what it's like. Anyone familiar with today's military structure understands what it feels like to do your duty without the support of your commanders for fear they'll be embarassed before their "supporters". There's nothing new in the technology department, and the character personalities are pretty generic, but the idea of a corporation gaining enough influence to challenge a planetary government is a scenario we may all view in our lifetime. The story pulls you along with the thought of "how will they get out of this" constantly going through your mind. You'll read and wonder where they will be going next. And, if you've played the game, you may even be able to visualize some of your more important battles and relive them once more. Unlike the Doom series of books, this series adds depth to the character. With a little more polish an entire new universe will be born from which story upon story can unfold.
