I would have to say that this is one of the best space sims out there. I have owned this game since it came out in the 90's and even with all of the great advances in graphics it still remains competitive with the newer technologies. This game has a great storyline with tons of different ships and weapons to use. I would highly recommend this game to everyone that likes space based games. I would also recommend that anyone planning on getting this game invest in a good joystick since it is much much harder to play using only your keyboard.

4.0 out of 5 stars BEST GAME I EVER PLAYED!!!, May 11, 2007
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Descent: Freespace: The Great War (CD-ROM)
If i could i would give this game a 4.5 overall rating. i just felt it could have been better. firstly the game doesn't end so gracefully, even like 3 more levels would have been better to end the story also silent threat (which DOES come with this order) has very little variety w/ regard to the missions, mostly just warp in, kill hostiles, warp out.

but the main camopaign is much better, spy missions, capture missions, recon etc, but i still think this one of the best games ever made.

p.s. anyone know where to get freespace 2 below 70 bucks?!

I loved the opening cinematic for this, it really sank its hooks into you and got you into the game. It was also one of the better examples of computer graphics at that time.

Gameplay was fantastic - in the era of the Star Wars games and Xwing Vs. Tie Fighter, this really offered something unique, a darker, more epic type battle.

The missions were varied, and gave a wide assortment of challenges.

The story was also something I liked, it really got you immersed into the game. Especially if you did as I did, and played it late at night and early into the morning, in a pitch black house with no other sounds happening.

I really with they'd reboot this for current technology, it would be awesome to play it on modern hardware.

I love the genre and the style of the game, but I think it may be showing some cracks around the edges. I think the technology has caught up with this version of the game, and it is just a bit buggy in the world of XP and Vista.
Still, the game is beautiful, and I am enjoying it, I just think that Freespace 2 might be a bit more on the software curve that is in line with the machines of today.
If you have 98 or XP, this game is still a winner. If you have Vista, then you may want to wait until Windows 7 comes out so you can use the XP mode to run fun games.
